Made the front headline of Drudge! He also went around and put everyone on the spot by asking them if they had African Americans on their writing staffs  (Homeland and House of Cards dudes awkwardly had to say no). Will be interesting to see if notorious diva Daniels hurts his shows chances as the campaign kicks up.  People may take offense.

I was shitting all over Mo’Nique for her ungrateful behavior but with every article it’s more clear to me that Daniels is a huge douchebag with even bigger ego. Those two deserve each other, no doubt about that.

Btw, have you seen those comments under the article? There’s so much racism and homophobia there it’s almost hilarious!

Lee Daniels doesn’t know what he is talking about. Isn’t Danny Strong white, he is the writer and creator of Empire. Wtf, I think he just want drama and attention.

Maybe he meant shows with no black writers on their staffs whatsoever, as opposed to Empire. There are times when I’m watching shows with black characters and it just sounds like a white person writing for a black character, and it’s distracting and inauthentic. That notion clearly seems to rub people the wrong way, but it’s the truth of the matter — the reason diversity is so important behind the scenes is because people are best equipped to tell stories their own experiences can inform. That’s not to say that everyone has to be boxed in to only making characters like themselves, but the natural limitations of specific perspectives are reflected in the work.

Before anyone goes about judging Lee Daniels for staements like these maybe you should think about where he is coming from. The playwright August Wilson made similar comments about his work and the theatre and many people were offended but both Wilson and Daniels have a point. We have had white male writers since the beginning of televison and it has given Black actors very limiting scripts to work off of.

If he had been polite no one would have listened. It wouldn’t have made the news and no one would be talking about it. I don’t feel sorry for the Homeland and House of Cards teams being uncomfortable for ten seconds if it made them think.

The movie basically written by Ava DuVernay even if she couldn’t get credit for it? I would assume not.

Anyone who thinks he is wrong clearly has no idea what he is talking about and is clearly a moron, and that is putting it politely.  There is nothing wrong or out of line with what he said in the least bit.  He is pretty much 100% correct and had some good points to make.  Yes, he could have been more diplomatic and polite about it, but that does not change the fact what he said is true.  I have no idea how anyone can call him stupid for saying what he said, if anything those people are the stupid ones.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to see fellow black people writing shows or characters that center on the black experience.  It’s no difference than having LGBT people write about the LGBT experience or having women write about women.  There is nothing wrong with wanting or expecting some authenticity behind the characters and stories being told.

It always amazes me how people love to complain about the entertainment and awards industries are so racist yet when it always comes time to discuss these issues they are the first people to dismiss these issues as “stupid”.  And he is not wrong that the biggest reason why we do not have more minority representation on screen is the fact we do not have minorities behind the camera.  Until that changes, we are going to continue to see a lack of diversity on TV and in the movies.

I still have no idea how anyone can claim what he isaying stupid or untrue.  I would love for any of the people above to prove how what he said is either stupid of untrue.  I get the feeling we will be waitng a very long time for anyone to prove that.

I completley agree with what he said. Take Scandal for example: Here is a show with a BLACK LEAD, but they only have 2 African American writers on the show. Shonda doesn’t write every episode, so that leave only 1 black person and that is male. Scandal is a show that needs diversity in the writers room for sure!

How can a white person tell a story about the black exeperience if they’ve never been black? Yes, Danny Strong wrote an episdoe of Empire but he had other writers contribute as well. All writers contirbute to an episode in the writers room. If Empires writers room looked like Scandal… I’m pretty sure the show would have failed! If you think about it… Scandal doesn’t even metion  Olivia experience as a black woman. They pretty much write her as a white woman. Other than that Lawn chair episode, she has never had any interaction with anyboy in the black community. She went an enitire 3 season without having any black clients. Are there  no black senators, ceo, etc in DC?

espnfan, you need to calm down with the personal attacks and name-calling, no one’s actually disagreeing with the points you raised. And it’s perfectly fine to take issue with the manner in which he expressed SOME of his points.

He’s totally right to say there should be more black writers in television (and more writers of color in general), so there’s no problem there and no one is saying otherwise. What I have issue with is the way he seemed to imply that one can only write characters of one’s own race. That’s a  reductive thing to think because a writer should be able to write any kind of character they want, instead of limiting themselves to one thing. I suppose he also thinks women can only write female characters and men can only write male characters? (And that is a problematic issue; a lot of female writers are turned down in Hollywood, and aren’t given a chance to write male-driven stories. meanwhile men are allowed to write anything they want). So yes, people of color should be writing their own stories, but that doesn’t mean a white person should only be allowed to write white characters. If he didn’t mean it liike that, he should have made that point more clear because it sounded douchey regardless of whether some of his points had truth to them.

VERY well said! I for one, applaud Lee for this move!

Whoa. I havent been a ‘fan’ of Daniel’es films, but I’m beginning to admire him as a man.

I thought I’d post this just for comparative reasons.  I dont know how you may feel about it, especially the biggest dumbest assumption-jumping duplicitous judgemental bitches around.

In Chinese ‘fighting’ films, whenever there are actors playing “Japanese”, they are Ninja warriors who kill the innocent; or, they have buck teeth and glasses and are toadies to the West.

In Japanese films, whenever there are depictions of Chinese people, they are in the background portrayed as servants, menials, and illiterate hicks.

No love lost between these two very different cultures.

Lee has guts for saying what he says. O yes, the man either doesnt care because he believes what he’s saying (so do I), or he’s sick and tired of keeping it inside. Maybe something in between.

    You go Lee!
