So I was thinking about those random/left-field nominees that pop up every year. I’m thinking American Ninja Warrior, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and Thomas Middleditch (2016), Richard Cabral and Niecy Nash (2015).

Which program or performance do you think could fit here for 2017?
Also, what are other examples of left-field nominees in previous years?

This year, I was thinking Alison Williams getting nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Girls. If they want to give the show a goodbye hug this would be a good and worthy nomination to give it.

Thomas Middleditch was definitely not a left field nominee, and to some extent, neither was Richard Cabral. Both of their shows were nominated for other major categories that year. To me, a left field nominee is someone that comes from nowhere and lands their show’s only major nomination. I’m not usually one to go out on a limb and predict anything too crazy, but this year my left field pick is Gina Rodriguez. I feel like there’s enough open slots in her category and she has been gaining enough goodwill in the industry to finally get the nomination.

If enough voters are watching Bloodline, I can fathom Sissy Spacek getting in.

Supporting actress in a comedy is the most wide open so I suspect that if it happens anywhere then it will be there. I have been slotting different actresses in and out of there to see what feels right – right now I have Olivia Coleman from Fleabag because…why not?

Wow, I can actually see that happen.

Catastrophe breaking out would not be leftfield. It would more-or-less follow the trajectory of The Americans (got the writing nom one year and broke out the following)

I hope Dear White People surprises.

    I have:
    June Squibb, Shameless
    Allison Willliams, Girls

    Getting nominated

Also Doona Bae gave the best female supporting performance this year on Sense8 and deserves to win, but she won’t even get that leftfield nomination. Meh.

Would Katheryn Hahn getting in for Transparent be considered left-field? Because I think she’s definitely getting nominated, but she’s so low in the prediction center.

I also think we could see Alison Williams for Girls or Olivia Coleman for Fleabag surprise us.

I agree with you. There are many other actress that the Academy loves more (not to mention only Gaby Hoffmann and Judith Light, but also Amy Landecker, Cherry Jones and Anjelica Huston are ahead of her)

Toby Jones for Sherlock: The Lying Detective

Don’t listen to me on that one though, that’s my own opinion clouding my judgment, and I freely admit that! 🙂

Left field and should stay there. Any of these:

Master of None, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Insecure, You’re the Worst, Fleabag, Better Things, Grace and Frankie, Jane the Virgin, Mozart in the Jungle, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Catastrophe, Santa Clarita Diet, Schitt’s Creek, The Mick, One Day at a Time.

Did You hear that? I just broke the record for the worlds loudest scream. I’m not even gonna rant about how half the things You said aren’t even close to left field.

How are master of None or unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt left field when they were nominated last year? Also @Guest2014 are you meaning should stay there as in you don’t want them getting nominated or they’re very likely to stay there? Cuz if it’s the former you have a lot of terrible opinions on comedies.
