Maybe It’s just me, but seeing the ad for ABC’s new Reba McEntire sitcom “Malibu Country”, I just can’t seem to understand why Lily Tomlin is in this show.   It would seem to me an icon as important to comedy as Tomlin would be able to land on a better (or at least a more creative) series than some middling Reba McEntire family sitcom….

It just seems like an odd choice for Tomlin…  It seems beneath her.

Maybe I’m wrong, but does anybody else see this as a career misstep for Tomlin.    The series just seems to conservative for her.

Tomlin’s career has ranged all over the place for decades. She’s a gypsy. Plus, most of the stuff she does are one-shots or day player gigs. The allure of a steady paycheck is strong. And McEntire’s last sitcom “Reba” was an underappreciated gem.

I guess I just find it odd that Tomlin, a opnely gay person would appear on a show as straight-laced as this one, and with Reba, who isn’t exactly pro-gay.

^ I’m sorry. But nothing Reba has EVER done has shown the slightest bit of her not being “pro-gay”

In fact, she even came out in support of homosexuals:

What she said was “I try not to judge”… To me, personally. that’s not really a statement of support so much as it is her trying not to make any statement at all.  Basically she’s saying she doesn’t agree with it, but she doesn’t want to risk alienating a part of her fanbase.   If you contrast that to somebody like Dolly Parton who has openly supported gay-rights and has fought for gay rights than you can see why I might not  take Reba seriously as somebody that supports the cause.

But in any case, my point is that it just seems like a strange choice for Lily Tomlin to make.

I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

However, I can see why Lily Tomlin took this. Reba’s last sitcom was fantastic, and is still watched by millions today thanks to re-runs. It sucks that the only Emmy nominations it received was for Picture Editing.

That, along with the announcement that the same guy who wrote Reba would also be writing MC, I can see why Lily Tomlin took this.

I’m excited about it. I have a special place in my heart for Tomlin. The first time I discovered who she was was in the first grade. Friday was movie day and we always watched The Magic Schoolbus (Daytime Emmy win!). LOVED hearing her voice. And then I would later see her rock the house on season three of Damages. So sad it didn’t result in an Emmy win (botched submission that resulted in Ann-Margret winning). As we all know, roles dries up for women at a certain point in their careers, so I’m thrilled to see Tomlin on the small screen and hope it’s a hit.

^ I agree. Tomlin is hilarious to me (still surprised she didn’t submit her name for consideration for her role on Desperate Housewives), and I absolutely adore Reba. The CW made the worst mistake of its life by cancelling that series, and no series has EVER come close to Reba‘s rating since then. Can’t wait to see Reba back on TV.

Tomlin’s playing Reba’s mother (did not realize that Tomlin was 73).

I loved Lily in The Incredible Shrinking Woman, All of Me and on Laugh-In reruns so I’m always happy to see her.

According to the Wikipedia page for the show, one of the characters is a gay teenager, the son of Reba’s neighbor.

I like Tomlin a lot and loved Reba when it aired years ago, but the trailer was awful as is Tomlin’s white hair/wig, one of the things I couldn’t take my eyes off while watching it and made me hate the show right away. It’s a silly thing, but I just can’t forget that part of the trailer.

Yeah I do agree with the part of Lily Tomlin having white hair. It just doesn’t seem right.

BTW, it is rumored that Carol Burnett will be guest starring soon as the mother of Reba’s neighbor (Sara Rue). Burnett has been quoted as saying she would love to do it.

My thing is, I would believe Carol Burnett playing Reba’s mother, ALOT more than I would Lily Tomlin being Reba’s mother. Just saying.

I must say I have always adored Lily Tomlin, ever since I saw her in 9 to 5 when I was nine years old, and it was playing on cable.    I also loved her Edith Ann cartoon in the 90’s, and I respect her ability to continue working at this age of hers, I just am a bit surprised she took a project like this, when she seems so much more suited for a series like “Modern Family”… but I’ll give this show the benefit of the doubt since Reba’s last sitcom was so good, and I still watch it in reruns to this day and I do love Sara Rue (I have loved her since “Popular”) and the news that it may have a gay character on it makes me see it in a different light.  I just hope they don’t reduce that character to stereotypes and cliched jokes about gender roles.

Maybe I’m being too hard on Reba. It was just a shock seeing Tomlin doing a project like this and yes, the white hair scared me too… I’ll try it out.

Perhaps the show will exceed your expectations and become better. I’ve never seen Reba, although I liked her in Tremors. If Tomlin is on, I just might take the time to see it.

    I adore her.

YES YES YES!!! OMG!!!!! One of those films that must be watched everytime it is on TV. It never gets old and I have no shame in calling it one of my proudest guilty pleasures. Thrilled to see another poster is familiar w/ it.
