I’m wondering why was Meredith Baxter never nominated for an Emmy for her work on “Family Ties”, it was at a time the most popular show on TV, well liked by critics, and produced a breakout star in Michael J. Fox.
Why then wasn’t Meredith who was a previous Emmy nominee, never once nominated for FT? I know MJF kind of became the breakout star of the show, but Meredith’s work on the show was equally good and she always delivered the goods.
How come she never once got a single nomination? Any Ideas?
The first time Michael J Fox broke in was 1985. The first Comedy Series nomination was in 1984.
By that time you had several strong female roles in Comedy that the Emmys annually nominated- Shelley Long in Cheers, Jane Curtain and Susan Saint James on Kate and Allie, Isabel Sanford in The Jeffersons, Phylicia Rashad in The Cosby Show, and than the real kiss of death for Baxter (and most other comedic actresses on the air), The Golden Girls- Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White.
Also whether it was fair or not, back than the impression was that Michael J Fox stole the show and overshadowed the lead parents Baxter and Gross, a very unfair judgment in my opinion. I would guess Baxter was top 10 in the vote getting but behind the women from The Golden Girls, Cheers, The Cosby Show, and Kate and Allie.
I guess the bigger tragedy is that Pylicia Rashad never won an Emmy! not to mention that she only got nominated twice!
I think it’s pretty fair to say MJF stole the show. He definitely helped raise the show a couple of levels above forgettable family sitcom. That show’s comedy was greatly driven by how his character’s behavior and values greatly contrasted with his family’s. Baxter and Gross played very bland husband and wife roles. They did what they could with the roles, but I don’t think they were nomination worthy. They were completely outshone by MJF and Justine Bateman.
Rashad was probably the best thing about The Cosby Show in its later years, but it’s a show that became pretty cheesy after its first couple of seasons. So, her limited nominations don’t bother me.
Baxter deserved the Emmy nominations she did receive, at least. She’s a terrific actor. I do remember FT’s, and the cast became almost supporting players around the fabulous MJF. I liked that the show allowed the characters to be ‘flawed’, and although she seemed to almost fade into the backiground as being almost non-descript in many eppies, the ones I remember featured her, her insecurities, and her classy nature.
That’s my take on it anyways. As to why she wasnt nominated, the audience draws and the scripts, showcased Fox and Bateman. jmho
