We know that the opening title credits are going to be re-filmed for Season 5, but there’s been no news on storylines etc… I wonder what direction it will take. Will Joe be a bit older or will he still be a baby…?

    One hour season premiere tonight!

Episode Titles: “Suddenly, Last Summer” & “First Days”

Synopses: In the season 5 premiere, the Pritchett clan’s end-of-summer shenanigans include Phil and Claire trying to line up their kids’ activities to have some free time alone, while Jay and Gloria help Manny get ready for his first solo trip to Columbia; later, Luke and Manny spend their first day in high school; Claire begins work at Jay’s company; Cameron becomes a substitute teacher, which means that Mitchell must get Lily ready for preschool on the day of an important meeting at work.

Do you have any scoop on Modern Family? —Helena

NATALIE: Is a Modern Family wedding on the horizon? Now that gay marriage is legal in California, Cam and Mitchell will consider tying the knot. “There’s something going on in that department,” executive producer Steve Levitan tells me. “They will get into it and it will create lots of issues.” But don’t expect Fizbo to make an appearance at the wedding!

I’m ready to hate-watch season five of this sometimes funny, often unimaginative 4-time winner for Best Comedy Series. Modern Family, why can’t I quit you?

They forgot to mention that Phil and Gloria are going to be film a local commercial and ruin the whole thing.

    Well…

Season 4 was better than Season 3, so maybe the upward trend will continue.

Well, I don’t agree. But even you’re right, to go from mediocre to somewhat tolerable is no great achievement.

I don’t believe it ever reached mediocre. The hate for the show derives from outside factors (4 series wins!) more than its actual quality.

Did it deserve to win 4? Nope. But it did have an excellent 1st season and three above average – good seasons after that (at least compared to the rest of television). I understand that the natural thing for most people is to hate the champion and root for the underdog (The MIddle isn’t a great show, for example), but MF did not dip in quality from S3 to S4.

Obviously, there’s no science behind this, but most people who have seen every episode prefer S4 to S3. And if they could win for S3… well, let’s just say I wasn’t buying the “30 Rock” hype. I know this show is hated around these parts, but I still feel its worthy of 4 series nominations, but only a win for the first season.

Let’s take the AV club’s reviews for instance (I don’t agree with Donna Bowman all of the time, but at least she’s seen every episode as well):

    3rd season:

14/24 episodes rated at B or higher (58%)
    7/24 episodes rated in the C range (29%) –> 2 C’s and one C-
4/24 episodes rated in the A range (17%)

    4th season:

18/24 episodes rated at B or higher (75%)
    1/24 episodes rated in the C range (4%) –> and it was a C+
6/24 episodes rated in the A range (25%)

It was markedly better… I honestly cannot comprehend how anyone says the 3rd is better than the 4th. They have to be influenced by outside factors. The show isn’t mediocre (3rd season came close) or bad. It’s not great, but it is frequently above average and occasionally very good.

The fact that MF won 4 Emmys in a row doesn’t bother me. I mean, it does, but that is not my problem with the show. Maybe some folks resent the success of MF. Not me. I resent the fact that the show just simply doesn’t make me laugh or feel or think the way that a show like 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Louie, or Veep does. I think the moment I knew this show was starting to be a fraud was when Sarah Hyland’s character made some joke about how Asians eat cats in an episode last season. Maybe that’s something that that character really would say, but it’s not funny. It’s a joke as old (and biggoted) as racism itself. I resent the fact that they cast a straight actor to ham it up and use every gay cliche in the book just for laughs. It’s also a show full of characters who never have to really deal with any problems. They’re all well-to-do, white people living in lavish homes. They call themselves a modern family, and yet they do not deal with most of the issues plaguing modern families. Especially in this era when the economy has crushed so many families, wouldn’t it have been good to give at least one of the subsets of the Dunphy-Pritchett clan some economic angst? Every episode is telegraphed. Mitch and Cam will snipe at each other like a couple of catty queens. Claire will ridicule her dummy husband. Jay will make some antiquated chauvinistic remark. And Gloria will honk loudly and we’ll all think it’s so funny how she doesn’t speak like us. Quite simply the show’s writing does not merit the recognition it has received. I keep watching it for two reasons. First, I know it’ll always be an Emmy contender, and I like to keep up with such programs, even if they drive me batty. Secondly, it isn’t a terrible show. It has moments of real warmth and hilarity. Unfortunately those moments are very few and far between anymore.

Modern Family’s first season was pretty good, but I don’t like Season 2 onwards
