Not a strong eppy. Lots of laborious set-up for farcical elements that never really paid off. Locking all the guys in the bathroom for however long it took to have the piano removed was especially strained. Jay telling Claire about his bedroom issues felt really off to me. And can Mitchell please catch a break with work?

“Wine Weekend”; Sarah Hyland was amazing in this episode. It was great to see her featured more. Hailey breaking the tiara, then blaming it on the others was classic Hailey. Cameron and Phil dancing was fantastic. They had me rolling. I hope we can see them share more scenes together. The rest of the episode was just okay.

I did not laugh a single time in this episode until the tag with the Facetime call from the basement.

Manny not understanding the sequence of events was particularly forced and out of character.

This episode was blah outside Mitch and Cam to be honest. My grade: C+

“Royal Visit” was an odd episode for me. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. I liked the Mitch/Cam stuff the most. Joe had me laughing the most. The best was when Jay said he’d catch him and Joe replied “What about you sciatic?”

I didn’t really care for the Dunphy storyline, but did enjoy the Hailey/Alex scene at the end. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard the seven ate (8) nine joke. I actually kind of liked Bill and hope he’s on more.

I liked this one much better than the last few. Further proof that Sarah Hyland needs her own series immediately after MF ends. All of her scenes were gold. Lots of fun wordplay and all three stories worked.

“Daddy Issues” was one of the better all around episodes. My favorite was the Gloria/Jay/Manny story. Can’t believe Gloria went that far, but I really loved the speech Jay gave Manny. I enjoyed Gabriel Iglesias, too. He and Rico Rodriguez really do look alike. The Cam/Mitch/Lily stuff was good, too. I like the scenes at the slumber party. I loved the Dunphy scenes at the apartment, then at the end with their mop. Joe still gets the best lines.

I noticed the Dunphy’s celebrated their anniversary in April this year. In seasons 1 and 5 (Great Expectations and A Fair to Remember) they celebrated it in November. In season 2 (Caught in the Act) it was in January. As much as I love MF, the changing of their back stories kind of annoys me.

Much like last week….I loved the ending but not the beiginning. My grade: B (the speech from Jay was kinda amazing so that upped it from a C+ to a B)

“CHiPS and Salsa” was a good eppy. I loved the flashback of the Dunphy race from season 1. Their story was nice, but predictable. The Cam/Mitch stuff was good, but something felt flat to me about it. The Gloria/Jay/Hailey stuff was the best.

The next two weeks they’re running re-runs. Only 3 episodes left in this season.

“Mother!”; this episode was cheesy, but I loved it. I always love it when Shelley Long guest stars as Deede. The scene with Mitch/Cam dancing in their aprons and Deede walking in on them was great. The Dunphy clan trying to break bad news to Claire was funny. Phil changing from jeans to shorts was good. I loved the Jay/Manny scenes and the movie. The whole part at the movie premiere was great. The ending with Phil screwing up all the time in the movie was great, too.

Only 2 more episodes this season.

“The Escape” was an average episode. The Hailey stuff was my favorite, especially when her exes all showed up at the hospital for her. I was excited for the Cameron/Phil/Gloria pairing, but they’re story felt really predictable. I didn’t care for the Aunt Becky story.

Only one episode left this season, hopefully it’ll end on a high note.
