with ballots out, was wondering what you guys thought the most overrated Emmy contenders were.
And, if you could swap them out for an underrated contender who would it be?
Discuss whatever categories you like.June 23, 2012 at 8:08 am #246936
I do believe that Parks and Recreation is just an overraed show as general. I just dont like it.June 23, 2012 at 8:09 am #246937
For me, the excessive love for Modern Famlily has gone completely out of hand. This particular third season has been dismal, I think I cringed in every episode and only laughed in a couple of episodes.
Also, the fact that the big cast takes so many slots in the supporting acting categories prevents the great ensembles from ‘Parks and Recreation’, ‘Community’ and ‘Happy Endings’ from getting nominations they really deserve.June 23, 2012 at 8:14 am #246938
Overrated Comedy: Curb Your Enthusiasm. It’s simply the ghost of what it once was. Emmys need to get over Larry David and his tired show.
Underrated Comedy: Happy Endings. This show is a comedic gold mine with fresh writing and an extraordinary talented cast. Special mentions to ensemble members Casey Wilson (who I never thought would return to TV after tanking so badly on SNL), Damon Wayans, Jr., and Adam Pally who I wouldrefer to see nominated over half of the Modern Family cast (Vergara, Stonestreet, and Ferguson, respectively).June 23, 2012 at 8:35 am #246939
Other than what has already been mentioned: Giancarlo Esposito. The character alone was unworthy of the love and praise he’s receiving. Forget that he’s out of his league any time he shares a scene with Cranston or Paul. I hope his momentum dies soon. It is simply undeserved.June 23, 2012 at 8:57 am #246940
Agreed. Saw a bunch of “Breaking Bad”s yesterday, and in the supporting actor race, Aaron Paul just acts circles around Esposito. I’ve been a big Esposito fan since back in the Spike Lee days, but here he underplays so much that his stillness often breaks up the momentum of a scene. Sometimes, the choice of stillness can be dynamic, other times it can make the performance seem inert, and that’s what I think we have here. That being said, I think he’ll still be nominated.June 23, 2012 at 8:58 am #246941

Luck is so NOT overrated. It is a great series which had the misfortune of being cancelled. Long live Luck!June 23, 2012 at 9:12 am #246943
Modern Family has benefited greatly from the horrificly stale level of network comedy. It is very overrated as a show.
I find so many of the cable shows that Emmy has fallen for in recent years- US States of Tara, Nurse Jackie, The Big C to be borderline unwatchable. And to think the lead stars are winning in the same category that has given its prize to such funny lady legends as Lucille Ball, Mary Tyler Moore, Jean Stapelton, The Golden Girls, Roseanne, etc just depresses me about the state of comedy.
I know I will get blasted for this one but I don’t care. I personally find Bryan Cranston’s performance in Breaking Bad to be VERY overrated. I think Aaron Paul consistently outshines him. I just find Cranston to be very one note. He growls and scowls for most of the episodes with this intense look on his face. I think he’s perfectly fine. But to win an Emmy for every season? No way no how is he that much better than every other actor on TV. Not buying that for one second. Especially when Paul has been the MVP of so much of these seasons.
As for underrated I was watching an episode of Suits this week and Patrick J. Adams was really fun. He reminds me of a young Michael J. Fox. His role also reminds me of James Spader in Boston Legal only less annoying and without the self righteous rantings of David E, Kelley at the end of every episode.June 23, 2012 at 9:25 am #246944
In my (not so popular) opinion, Game of Thrones and Mad Men are completely overrated shows. Honestly, they’re nothing special.June 23, 2012 at 9:51 am #246945
Underrated: Regina King!!!!June 23, 2012 at 9:52 am #246946
Good Wife is overrated. Even people who like the show dismiss an aspect of it! The cases of the week are frequently criticized as terrible or underdeveloped or a waste of time and it still gets high praise from a lot of people. It’s like the people who supported Grey’s Anatomy because they dismissed the medical drama aspect.June 23, 2012 at 9:57 am #246947
I also really like Patrick J. Adams. As for Cranston being one note and ovarrated. I love Aaron Paul, he’s my favorite actor on TV, possibly in the industry, but Cranston is fucking brilliant.June 23, 2012 at 10:09 am #246948
Underrated: Regina King!!!!
I second that!
As for overrated performers… definetely Bryan Cranston. He’s great but four Emmys? Please…
