Everyone loves compiling lists of the best TV characters ever, but what about the characters you love, but just don’t get the air time, the material or the chance to shine in the way you hope they might.

Who are your most underused characters ever on television?

Jacqueline Sharp in House of Cards, played by Molly Parker.
A character with a ridiculous amount of promise. The debate episode in Season 3 finally gave her a prominent chance to shine, but I fear she will continue to be shoved to the background throughout Season 4. I hope I’m wrong, because Parker has been fantastic with the limited material she has been given thus far.

Peter Quinn – Homeland. Besides a well acted scene in 5.01 regarding the Middle East/ISIS, his character was relegated to a hospital bed/pain/torture for the majority of the season. I’ve been waiting for the writers to give him good material for him to stretch his acting chops.

Sniper Tim on Justified. He was hilarious, and so underused. Both he and Rachel were, but his character was more interesting. C’est la vie.

    .

Along with Robin Wright the best thing about that show! Ridiculous that she’s only in 4 (I think?) episodes of the 13 in season 4, especially after Parker’s amazing debate episode.

Regina King you can’t say is ‘underused’ in The Leftovers as it’s an ensemble cast, but I was always thinking about her whenever she wasn’t on screen which is a good thing.

I’m obsessed with Carice Van Houten on Game of Thrones and Melisandre is definitely underused when other more cliche/less well acted characters get loads of screen time.

Erica Tazel and Clayne Crawford are deserving of more screen time on Justified and Rectify respectively.

Was going to say Saul Goodman but we got Better Call Saul.

I’ll go with Christopher Eccleston in The Leftovers

Alot of mine would be some of the guest stars on Glee. They had such a fantastic group of guests that might have done a handful of episodes and just never came back. One particularly was Molly Shannon. She was on Season 1 for two episodes as one of the teachers and I wish they found her more story opportunities. Even like Neil Patrick Harris, Carol Burnett (she did come back for the last season though but she should have been utilized in other seasons), and a few others I am blanking on.

Twisty on Freak Show to me was killed off to early and kind of halted a really strong opening for the show.

    I’m thinking of some more

On M*A*S*H*, Lieutenant Kellye Yamato appeared throughout all eleven years of the highly respected, Emmy winning Best Comedy Series. Beginning in the initial season as an extra, her face became more visible throughout the years until an episode, “Hey Look Me Over,” highlighted the overlooked nurse in the eleventh and final season. Actress Kellye Nakahara was outstanding in the role. It was unfortunate that she wasn’t elevated to a prominent role till the end of the long run.

Boardwalk Empire: Michael Stuhlbarg as Rothstein (most criminal example I can think of), Paul Sparks as Mickey, Anatol Yusef as Lansky.

The West Wing: Dule Hill as Charlie Young.

The Shield: Michael Jace as Julien.

    Justified: Jacob Pitts as Tim.

Game of Thrones: Liam Cunningham as Davos, Conleth Hill as Varys, Kristofer Hivju as Tormund, and especially Julian Glover as Pycelle.

Deadwood: Leon Rippy as Tom Nuttall.

Freaks and Geeks: Seth Rogen as Ken Miller.

Mad Men: Aaron Staton as Ken Cosgrove, Teyonah Parris as Dawn Chambers.

30 Rock: Keith Powell as Toofer, Scott Adsit as Pete.

Sons of Anarchy: Kim Coates as Tig (ceased to be a regular focus after Season 2 other than in a small handful of episodes).

The Wire: John Doman as Bill Rawls.

The Sopranos: Steven Van Zandt as Silvio Dante (not one episode where he has a real storyline on his own), Robert Funaro as Eugene.

Lost: Jeff Fahey as Frank, Daniel Dae Kim as Jin.

Oz: David Zayas as Enrique Morales, Granville Adams as Arif, Michael Delmare as Jia Kenmin, John Doman as Edward Galson, Philip Casnoff as Nikolai Stanislofsky.

I feel like Cyril, Cheryl, and Malory on Archer are getting progressively less to do.

I always noticed Chief Wiggum was the only super regularly prominent character who didn’t get any real spotlight episodes in classic Simpsons.

It seems like it would be self-sabotage to list anyone from OITNB. That’s a pretty good compliment to it.

I looked up the cast of Twin Peaks, which was a flawed show with a huge cast, but surprising nobody felt underused.

On The Good Wife, I think Robyn would apply to this thread.   She basically just vanished. Same with Michael Boatman as Julius Cane.

From Grey’s Anatomy, I’ve always thought Justin Chambers could do more than he was given the chance to do.   And Chandra Wilson has been pretty underused the last few seasons.

French Stewart on “Mom.” He had a very funny character, but the writers never gave him enough material so they dropped his character after Season 2. What a shame especially because the show needs more male characters.
