Michael Ausiello is exclusively reporting that ATAS is considering a proposal to separate all movie / mini categories, including all of those acting categories:

    Thoughts?

I don’t like this idea. Keep the acting categories the way they are. However, I do agree that there are more miniseries than there used to be, so just separate the categories: one for Outstanding Miniseries, and one for Outstanding Made for TV Movie. However, there is no need to separate the acting categories.

Geez, why do they feel the need to mess with the miniseries/movie categories EVERY YEAR????

This would be a good idea if it seemed like there were a lot of worthy nominees for both miniseries and TV movies. But I’m not entirely sure that is the case. Maybe a split between Best Miniseries and Best TV Movie, yes. But the acting categories too? That’s four new categories to fit into an already too-crowded show. And are the contenders there? Last year, only one Lead Actor nom was for a miniseries, one Lead Actress nom was for a TV movie, and one Supporting Actor nom for a TV movie. I’m not entirely confident it’s a great idea.

Is Ryan Murphy behind this idea?

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries
    – Angela Bassett
    – Kathy Bates
    – Frances Conroy
    – Sarah Paulson
    – Lily Rabe

Okay, at least no younger actress from AHS gets in. LOL

Now just do a miniseries, and you will get an easy Emmy nom.

Copying and pasting what I just commented on the article:

This is an awful idea. There are too many categories as it is.

Between actors and actresses, lead, supporting and guest, comedy,
drama and movie/mini and having six slots in most categories, they do
know that they already nominate at least ninety-two acting performances
every year, plus ties and voice acting. Then they have eight categories
    for best sound.

Is being nominated for an Emmy even that prestigious with that in
mind? The Oscars only nominate twenty and have a better reputation and
    brand for it.

I should whip up a negative article as soon as I finish the SAG one that I am working on.  Gold Derby does have some clout when it comes to stuff like this.

Ausiello says in the last paragraphs that they would have to push some of those categories to the Creative Arts Awards, like they’ve done with Guest Actor and Actress.

I don’t believe you reject this idea. I think you resent the obvious intention behind it. Awarding more film actors in miniseries and made for television movies. Clear as day the TV Academy loves an Oscar winner. Hell they love several Oscar winners either expanding their Emmy count or being anointed with their first.

I think that’s a good idea maybe to seperate Outstanding TV Movie and Outstanding Miniseries.

Don’t separate the acting categories. Make it six nominees.

Not if there’s 48 miniseries in contention like that article says. There’s that many?

Off topic but honestly I’d rather Emma Roberts(yea I said it) get in for scene-stealer Madison Montgomery than Kathy Bates who is normally incredible but who aside from the first episode is playing an under-used, under-written, and cliche character(through no fault of her own)

They shouldn’t have split the miniseries and made for television film categories to begin with. But separate acting categories for miniseries and made for television films? Hmmm. This will raise numerous issues. What/who gets nominated? Which categories get time-shifted to the creative arts Emmys? I’ve always had issues with how voters judge categories with nominees from two-hour telefilms and ten-hour miniseries in them, but I don’t know about all of this. Some years will be much stronger than others, but if more miniseries and made for television films are in contention now, maybe adding more categories is for the best.
