Trailer for Season 2 is out. Good looking trailer. Not surprisingly, it looks like the fallout from the big hack will be the main focus.

This made me desperate to rewatch the first season again. I’m so happy this show is back and that there will be summer appointment TV!

USA released the season premiere early. They are saying it’s only available to watch for a short time. I don’t know if that’s just hype or not. Link to watch below:

They weren’t bluffing, they took it down quick, lol. I wanted to catch it right after The Night Of but it was already too late.

Season 2 premiere tonight! It’s a lengthy episode – 90 minutes. Afterwards is a post-show wrap-up ‘Hacking Robot’ thankfully not hosted by Chris Hardwick

Five/nine has changed the world; Elliot is in seclusion; Angela finds happiness at Evil Corp.; fsociety delivers a malicious payload.

Yeah, instead it’s hosted by Andy Greenwald, who was cringeworthy on the one ep of After the Thrones that I saw. As annoying as Hardwick can be, he’s at least a competent host.

So the Metacritic will end up at or around 81, which is a touch higher than season 1. (Anyone a little surprised looking back that Season 1 was ‘only’ a 79?)

Not at all. The score was probably based on the first 2-3 eps as always. TV Metacritic scores, with the exception of Netflix shows in which some critics watch a lot of the episodes before posting a review, are pretty much worthless. Yeah, they give you an idea of how critics are responding initially to a show, but a lot can change over the course of a season. People put way too much stock into these scores. You really have to wait until the end-of-the-year Top 10 lists on Metacritic and HitFix to get a true idea of the critical reception of a show. That being said, 81 has gotta be viewed as a disappointment since the first season was so acclaimed. It could obviously turn out to be a fantastic season, but it could just as well completely fall apart.

Breaking Bad started with 73, Mad Men 77, FNL 78. Eventually acclaimed shows that aren’t front-loaded with hype, a super impressive pilot and/or simply don’t appear very critic friendly at first glance tend to fall in the 70-something region their first season. But 79 is exactly the score I’d give the entire first season of Mr Robot.

Metacritic scores are more accurately thought of as being based half off of the first few episodes of the new season and half off of what critics thought of the previous season. I mean, it make sense. As a critic, this could be the one review of the show that you publish all season, so you want to encourage readers to tune in for the season based on what you know the show is capable of as opposed to how this specific episode is. The 79 makes sense, as explained above.

That 81 is pretty disappointing. Consider the “first”/”second” season Metacritic scores for critically-acclaimed shows below. There is strong consensus that each had a better first season than second in hindsight, but critics went out of their way for each score to make huge gains after underrating the shows initially:

    78 → 87: UnREAL
    69 → 77: Empire
79 → 89: Orange is the New Black
    92 → 96: Homeland
    80 → 90: Game of Thrones
    77 → 88: Mad Men
    75 → 81: Damages
    78 → 88: Friday Night Light

So 81 on its own is a decent score, but for the second season of Mr. Robot? It should be five to ten points higher, given the above. Makes me wonder if these first few episodes are not great or if time has caused critics to reevaluate the first season. Maybe some of them are like me and Icky and do not understand how a show that we feel actually deserves 79 for its whole first season won Critics’ Choice and the Golden Globe and so on.

Skimming the reviews it appears some are frustrated with the first few episodes while others simply appreciate the show more than they like it. I’m not really all that surprised by the score. The critics that really loved the first season, well, love it. But even deep into the first season’s run individual episode reviews were mixed.

Yeah, 79 for the entire first season would be a fair score, maybe even a bit lower. And after watching the premiere and with even more backlash starting to creep through, I don’t think the show’s acclaim will last. There are a lot of aspects of the show that are just very easy to pick apart and make fun of tbh.
