Emmys: TV Academy Expands Short Form Categories, Approves Other Rule Changes
    http://deadline.com/2016/03/emmys-short-form-categories-rules-changes-2016-1201712633/

    Highlights:
    * Most notably, the derbies for directing and writing, for both comedy and dramas series, have been increased to six noms in each category.

    Five new/replacement categories:
Outstanding Short Form Series – Comedy or Drama. (This replaces the category known as Short Format Live Entertainment)
Outstanding Short Form Series – Variety. (This is a new category)
Outstanding Short Form Series – Reality/Nonfiction. (This replaces the Short Format Nonfiction category)
Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Series – Comedy or Drama.
Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Series – Comedy or Drama.

The expanded short form categories will be presented as part of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies.

You know, I had a little heart-attack when I read the part ”New Categories&Expansions”
The last things Emmys ever need was more extra categories, but they expanded the categories that most(and only) needed to be expanded! Writing&Directing! YAYYYY! It was already ridicolous to have 6 for Mini/Movie but not for Drama/Comedy. I hope this leads to more inspring choices for little-seen shows like I’d hoped and not more repetitive things.

I don’t even know what Short Form series are or what they cover. Someone care to explain? thedemonhog?
Will it make people like Billy Eichner eligibile in acting categories?

And does this mean that there will be no more announcement or any other rule change before this Emmy season? 🙁
If they had other ideas they would have declared in this statement, right?

Short-form series would be things like Children’s Hospital on Cartoon Network. I assume Billy on the Street would count as Variety, not Comedy or Drama, and therefore he won’t be eligible for the acting category.

Off the top of my head, webisode series like Heroes: Dark Matters (all about Phoebe’s backstory) and Flight 462 from Fear the Walking Dead, seem like the most notable Short-Form Comedy or Drama series I can name.

My Predictions: “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen” has the Reality/Nonfiction short category on lock.

Thanks! I get it now. Something like Web Therapy would have been eligibile if they invented this last year, right? And would have dominated the acting categories, too. The whole Holywood were on that show.
They better use panels to choose acting nominees in those categories then. I doubt anyone from acting branch watch those shows.

So happy about the expansion of the writing and directing categories. Now let’s hope that the extra slot isn’t just filled with an added GOT ep and the academy actually reaches a little deeper to make some unexpected choices.

I am still sort of unsure about the short form categories. Maybe I am just not watching enough web series/don’t know of enough good ones but if they are culling acting nominees from Walking Dead and Heroes:Reborn web spinoffs then yikes. I do love Last Chance Kitchen though.

I think overall it is a good idea because web based short form content is certainly rising in popularity I am just not sure there is enough there this particular year to justify it. We’ll see. I would gladly take an recommendations of quality short form programs from any forum users!

A great contender for these categories a few years ago would have been “The Ones” and “Whatever This Is.” People should check those out on Youtube.

Interestingly, a number of previous “Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program” nominees wouldn’t be eligible, like Super Bowl Halftime shows and the Parks and Rec things because they don’t have 6 episodes.

Short format series nominees since that category was invented:
The Daily Show: Correspondents Explain – thedailyshow.com ++
    30 Rock: The Webisodes – nbc.com ++
Childrens Hospital – Cartoon Network ++
Parks and Recreation: April and Andy’s Road Trip – nbc.com
    Web Therapy – lstudio.com
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis – funnyordie.com++
    Burning Love – yahoo.com
Parks and Rec in Europe – nbc.com
    Keeping – NBC
Billy on the Street: With First Lady Michelle Obama, Big Bird And Elena!!! – funnyordie.com
Childrens Hospital: Just Like Cyrano de Bergerac – Adult Swim
Key & Peele Presents Van And Mike: The Ascension: Episode 5 – comedycentral.com

I’m not sure which of these would have had eligible actors in them as the only one I’ve watched is Web Therapy for Meryl.
I’m guessing just Burning Love, Web Therapy before it moved to Showtime, and Childrens Hospital?

    So agreed!

I also prefer ”the prestige” of having less nominees, but 5 is too small of a number. And how it could be considered a prestige if they were just serving as the copypaste of Series nominees.(Which they probably will again, but there is always hope.)

    Since 2010 the non-Series nominee dramas that got nominated for writing;
    The Americans, The Killing

    Got nominated for directing:
Boardwalk Empire, The Knick, The Borgias, The Killing, Treme(most of them were directed by popular names.)

I just noticed this new wording for Series classificatrion:

“Once a show is established as a series, if additional shortened seasons are added (fewer than six episodes), it would still be considered a series, unless it was limited to one or two episodes (which would categorize it as a movie and a limited series respectively).”

Maybe we call this the Treme Rule, since that HBO series was able to game the system and got nominated as a Miniseries for its 5-episode final season. It also would’ve prevented The Big C from being a Miniseries for its final run.

Most importantly, if I’m reading it right, it means Netflix’s forthcoming Gilmore Girls: Seasons will NOT be allowed to compete as a Limited Series. Or does the fact that it will have 90-minute episodes change that?

    It’s only 4 episodes.

    Other rules changes include:

Eliminating ranked voting in the final round: Categories in which voters were asked to rank nominees in order of preference will now require just a single vote for the top selection only.

    • Expanding picture editing for reality programming and production design for variety series/special to two categories.

    • Changing the categorization of shortened seasons for series: Once a show is established as a series, if additional shortened seasons are added (fewer than six episodes), it would still be considered a series, unless it was limited to one or two episodes (which would categorize it as a movie and a limited series respectively).

    • Adding a two-step nominating process for special visual effects.

YASSS! Academy. People wouldn’t care but that first rule will change so many things. I bet that so many of those lazy winners and sweeps last year wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for that stupid rule. Of course no one put Bill Murray or Margo Martindale at last place. And they won off by being less last places than others.
    Vote-splits will happen more, hovewer.

Thanks John. That third rule also has been a long time coming. BYE The X Files, Gilmore Girls and future 24 seasons.
I wish they would invent something that would prevent Luther and Sherlock competing in Mini/Movie, too. And they still left an open door with saying ”unless it was limited to one or two episodes” which was uneccesary. So Looking: Movie, if it happens, will still be eligible.

Couldn’t care about the second rule but ”two-step nominating process” is always good and actually should be used in every single category.

Wait how would submission work for shows with 3-5 episodes?

In theory don’t we still kinda have tapes with a combined 6 episodes?

It’ll be bizarre if we have 3-episode Series and 13-episode Miniseries…
