After Matt LeBlanc received his second Emmy nomination as the lead actor of Episodes, I thought back to the show’s beginning on Showtime and I remembered that LeBlanc did not even appear in the show’s first episode.

The show’s leading actor did not even appear in the first episode.

Are there any other cases of a lead (or supporting) nominee that did not even appear in their show’s first episode? Have any won?

    Quite a few.

Christine Lahti joined Chicago Hope in its second season (1995–96) and won for its fourth (1997–98). Also a couple of actors from The Practice: Michael Badalucco (wasn’t in the pilot), Lara Flynn Boyle (joined in season two), Holland Taylor (was a recurring in season three) and of course James Spader (joined for the eighth and final season). Benjamin Bratt, Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston were also later additions to the cast of Law & Order.

Christopher Lloyd won Lead Actor in 1992 for a guest appearance on Avonlea but that was an odd year when the Academy allowed guests to compete alongside lead and supporting performances–there were a number of other guest stars who managed to get nominated in lead/support this year.

More recently, William Hurt was nominated in Supporting Actor for sleepwalking through the second season of Damages. Martin Short received a nod in the same category the following year.

An interesting one is Julia Louis Dreyfus for Seinfeld. She’s not in the Pilot episode and I think she only appears in episode 3, after which she’s in every single episode of the series.

Yeah, no offense, but this isn’t necessarily a strange phenomena.

Maybe if it was limited to the first season only (like a leading or supporting actor who was nominated for their first season without appearing in the pilot/very first episode.) That would be a more narrow list.

Otherwise, high-profile actors join TV shows in the middle of their runs all the time.

Speaking of Christopher Lloyd, one should point out that he didn’t join Taxi as a regular until Season 2 (after making a one-episode guest appearance in Season 1) and he ended up winning 2 Emmys for the final years of the show. Carol Kane also managed the same feat.

Kim Delaney won for NYPD Blue after joining a few years in.

I’m interpretting the question more as, the actor was on the show in the first season, but didn’t appear in the Pilot. Which for a lead actor, like Leblanc, would be completely unusual.

Actually, LeBlanc did appear in the first episode, but it’s easy to forget about the show’s in media res opening scene with the car accident.

    Desperate Housewives has two cases:

Kathryn Joosten was nominated in the Supporting Actress category in Season 8. She was introduced in episode 1.14 as a Guest performer.

Alfre Woodard was nominated for the show’s second season. She first appeared in episode 1.22.

Yeah I don’t know where the LeBlanc thing comes from. He does appear in the show’s Pilot.

Mayim Bialik first made a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory at the end of season 3, and became a series regular in season 4.
