Let’s see what comes out of this mess. Every year we all say the same thing and we end up watching all the way through the end.

I listened to Phillip Phillips’ album this weekend and I thought it was pretty nice. About 25% Dave Matthews but it was still good. And Home is easily the best winner song they’ve ever had.  I’m not saying that I want another white guy mellow rocker to win, but this one was actually a good one.

I have a feeling this season will be horrible, just like last year.

I only watched the first hour, and no one really struck my attention there. I did like the new “I Nominate” concept, though I hope that doesn’t do people a disservice when an audition is sprung on them and they aren’t allowed the months and months of prep time that others might have put into this. That blonde bar singer girl might have made it through with a bit more preparation. I’d agree that she needs more time to “find herself” and shouldn’t look to this show to define who she is as an artist. Most of my attention focused on the judging panel, which shouldn’t be how it is but how TPTB probably want it anyway for the money they’re paying them. Randy’s always Randy, so whatever to him. Keith Urban was a non-factor. I’m so used to Blake Shelton on “The Voice” with his outsized personality, and Urban was just there from what I saw. This season is going to be all about Mariah and Nicki Minaj outdiva-ing each other, and it’s tiring already. They can both have relevant things to say if they actually let the other one speak. You do start to see Mariah’s material side come out with some of these people, and that’s a side to her I’ve never seen before (though I rarely pay attention to her for good reason). NIcki’s bluntness could reach Cowell levels unchecked. Either way, I’m curious to see where this all goes now.

    Is anyone watching this show?

I enjoy Nicki Minaj as a judge.  She entertains me.  Mariah Carey is boring .  Keith Urban is forgettable and Randy Jackson is just Randy.

I can’t remember any of the contestants names.  There were a few that stood out to me.

    I’m watching.

I think it’s going just like any other year. I like Nikki as a judge, she’s been doing a good job. She’s trashy, yeah, she tries to hard to be ghetto, yeah, but at least she’s not annoying and it’s funny most of the time. Mariah looks bored (but at least not at Britney levels of boredom) most of the time but her reactions to Nikki make up for it.

Considering it is still the most watched singing competition on television (scoring higher rating that The Voice), YES, people are still watching it.

I think the judges are doing a fine job.  The Minaj-Carey “feud” was definitely blown WAY out of proportion.  I do not think Mariah is “boring” or is “bored” as mentioned above; obviously, she is the most qualified to offer criticism/praise and it is telling that a vast majority of the contestants are most excited to meet and impress her.  She is not a theatrical and attention-seeking as Minaj, but she seems very passionate and humbled to be able to discover talent.  She is really the only judge who has showed any emotion over a singer/performance and I think he presence is much needed.  I think the “boredom” mentioned above was more apparent in the first couple of episodes and wasn’t truly boredom, but rather frustration with Minaj’s attempts and hijacking the panel and making it about her.  I’d be bored with her garbly bullshit rambing too.

HOWEVER, the last couple of episodes have been very, very good. Minaj seems to have piped down quite a bit and Keith is actually getting to say things. Perhaps the best auditions episodes of AI in quite some time.  The judges seemed to have really gotten into the groove, Mariah and Nicki seem to be tolerating each other much more (they were even sitting next to each other last night) and the focus on the terrible auditions has lessened.  Last night showed some great talent and good “stories,” which we know is important.   I really like and appreciate the diversity in the contestants that have been sent through.  I think Hollywood week will be interesting and if all goes as it is should, we could end up with some truly great SINGERS make it to the live broadcast, which is what the show is about.

Definitely excited to see what happens.   Oh, and springboarding off of the “is anyone still watching this” comment—-I keep reading people saying this show should be cancelled ASAP—my questions is WHY?  The ratings, despite the decrease, are still among the best on television and it continues to be the most watched reality show.  I honestly do not see it being cancelled anytime soon—I just wonder what they will do with the judging panel next season.

Yes, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers drop off once Hollywood Week begins, as a lot of people probably watch just to see how the bad acts respond (and I wonder how many of them know perfectly well that they are terrible singers but just want to make a name for themselves the way William Hung did – I find it a little hard to believe that, after 11 years, anybody still thinks that everybody who auditions gets to sing in front of the judges); the numbers then pick up again as people start watching “just for the good singers”.

Still, American Idol and The X Factor are definitely Fox’s top two rated non-sports shows, and Fox has enough trouble as it is filling its timeslots (I doubt The Mob Doctor would have lasted as long as it did had Fox had a replacement show ready), so they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
