Showtime’s highly successful drama ‘Shameless’ returns with their third season this Sunday. Who else is looking forward to getting back in touch with the Gallagher clan? This is currently my favorite show on television. I love the characters, the performances, and the writing of this show. Hopefully with season 3 it can finally get some Emmy love beyond a Guest Actress nomination for Joan Cusack. Emmy Rossum in particular continuously delivers awards-worthy work.

Although it rapidy changes tone from episode to episode, Shameless is one of my favorite shows on television as well. I’ll take Emmy Rossum over “crazy eyes” Claire Danes any day.

It does switch up tones, but that’s one of my favorite things about it. Sometimes hard times can bring about unexpected humor, and I appreciate this show’s twisted sense of humor. And when things get dramatic, it never feels forced; partially due to the writing, but mostly it’s the performances. Emmy Rossum’s perfomance as Fiona is so lived in, so nuanced, she IS Fiona. She has a lot of problems, but she never resorts to crazy histrionics when the material could easily allow that. Same goes for Jeremy Allen White as Lip. When they share scenes together, it’s dynamite. I’m hearing that this season will pit Fiona and Lip against each other for “control” of the household. That should definitely ignite some sparks.

I’m glad its not mirroring the British version otherwise Fiona would be out by now! Emmy Rossum plays the character so well. Such a good TV show, it deserves recognition.

I agree with everything everyone here has said. I love this crazy show. It’s pretty much the show I get the most excited for.

Although, I wouldn’t say Emmy Rossum is better than Claire Danes…

This so much. I too am looking forward to the show coming back. I have resigned myself from thinking anyone will give this show any awards love. It is what it is at this point.

I love Shameless and like everyone above am looking forward to the season 3 premiere. I’ll be watching it onDemand after the Golden Globes. I’d like to see at least the Globes recognize Emmy Rossum next year (she did receive a Critics’ Choice nom for season 2). Fiona’s one of my favorite characters on television right now.

Louise Fletcher was completely snubbed of a Guest Actress Emmy last year. That snub didn’t make any sense.

Ugh… I love this show so much. Is it great television? Not really? Is it still good and hugely entertaining? Hell yes. Easily one of the more overlooked dramas on television. Gaaahhhh!!! I can’t wait for it to come back on.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new season too. Emmy Rossum should be a two-time Emmy nominee by now. I wouldn’t place her above Claire Danes though, who’s doing Cranston-level work on the female side, and I doubt that “Shameless” will ever give Rossum that kind of material. But who knows what’s in store for Fiona this season. Someone needs to nominate Rossum for something, dammit! And yes to Louise Fletcher being seriously robbed last season in guest actress in a drama series. They need to drop Joan Cusack from the lineup for good, and also get rid of god-awful Justin Chatwin while they’re at it (which I know will never happen since the show believes that Fiona and Jimmy/Steve are soulmates, and Chatwin’s getting more screentime this season than last). Hoping for the best this season regardless!

I completely agree. Fletcher was AMAZING. Simply amazing. I thought she’d be a threat to win, and then she didn’t even get nominated. A travesty. I love Joan Cusack on the show, but c’mon! She’s a SUPPORTING player, she’s not even a guest actress. To say so is ridiculous.

    Episode Title: “El Gran Canon”

Synopsis: In the season 3 premiere, Fiona struggles to accept the new Jimmy; Frank awakens in a place that is completely foreign to him; Jody and Sheila lose sleep over baby Hymie’s nocturnal restlessness; Lip gets sentenced to community service.

    Discuss.

I can’t wait. I’m almost finished with rewatching season 2, and then it’s premiere time!

I just love the characters so much. Fiona, Lip, and Ian are very relatable for my brothers and I, and that no doubt plays a part in why we love the show so much. We deeply care about these characters (and Debbie, Carl, and Liam… and Kev and V, my favorite couple on television).

Yeah, besides Rossum, I don’t really much care anymore if the show is nominated for anything. It’s just a fun, crazy show and I love it!.

Unfortunately, I’m watching the Golden Globes so I’ll have to record the premiere and watch it later.

The premiere did a fine job of catching up with everyone and where they’re at in their lives, and the preview for the rest of the season looked intense! I can’t wait for next week.

Lots of starting threads going on for the rest of the season. I’m glad that the show’s back and that it looks like it hasn’t missed a beat. Emmy Rossum was great as usual, but I’m ready for Fiona to have at least one major success this season. It’s hard to see her struggle and struggle (that raw sewage job scene was horrible) and make mistake after mistake (it’s already telegraphed that her risky club promotion job won’t work out for her, and losing all of that family money will lead to Lip wanting to take control of the house). The tonal shifts for the show are still weirdly executed. One minute Kevin and V are re-enacting dom scenes for their webcast (slavery is in this year, it seems!), and later Jimmy is part of an execution scene straight out of “Breaking Bad.” And all of that damn screentime for Justin Chatwin, UGH! Why didn’t Antonia’s dad just finish the job with Jimmy/Steve on the yacht, “Sopranos” style? That would have been hot. I thought that Lip and Ian were on the outs still. I’m glad they seem to be okay now, though the scenes with Lip’s race car thing stalled. Can’t wait until the truth about Harry Hamlin’s character comes out (no pun intended). Frank’s scenes in Mexico actually used William H. Macy to good use for a change, and the drug mule/makeover scenes were fun to watch. El Gran Canon, indeed! (Thx, Shelia!) Joan Cusack didn’t have too much to do here, and I didn’t care either way about her. Loved the last scene with the family at dinner with disheavled Frank looking on and Debbie being the only one who cared that he’s back before the rest of them went right on talking and eating. The Gallaghers are ready for business, bitches!

Grade for “El Gran Canon”: B+
