The fourth season of Shameless premieres January 12th on Showtime.

The third season finale is my second favorite episode in all of television for 2013 (next to “Ozymandias” from Breaking Bad) so I am very excited about this new season.

I’m content with it. I thought Jimmy/Steve started to drag the show down with the crazy antics related to the Estefania marriage and I prefer much of the focus to be on the Gallagher family. It’s actually one of the problems I still have with Frank’s character; he’s so frequently despicable that it’s not even entertaining anymore.

So, I was ecstatic when the season 3 finale dealt with both of these issues by killing off Jimmy and having Frank reach some sort of conclusion regarding the importance of family and bonding with Carl.

I can’t wait! I’m excited to see Lip in college, and to see where Frank’s character goes next after the cliffhanger at the end of last season. And even from the previews, Emmy Rossum is just killing it. Even if she never lands a nomination, Rossum consistently gives one of the most compelling performances on television.

I have no idea why, but the Shameless facebook page uploaded the premiere today.

So yeah, if you’re in the U.S. you can watch it. If you’re outside of the U.S., it’s all over the internet to download or stream now. I’ll post my thoughts (with spoiler tags) after I watch it tonight.

    Just letting you guys know!

I have sporadically kept up with shameless, and I had the same thoughts as you do.  I am not going to miss Jimmy/Steve as the endless will they-won’t they between him and Fiona had grown tiresome.  The Jimmy character had also grown tiresome and worn out his welcome as well.  I also agree about Frank, who at this point is just a chore to watch and totally unenjoyable.  He has become so awful and terrible, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.  I find nearly every other character on the show more interesting and enjoyable than him.  At this point I would not really care if he died and went away or not.

On a seperate note, does anyone know what is going on with Cameron Monaghan/Ian?  I know on the show he ran off to join the military, but I am wondering what the reason for his real life pro-longed absence is.  He is my favorite character and I would be dissapointed if he were actually leaving the show.  It sounds like he will be a part of the show, but on a limited basis.  Along with Fiona, he is one of the characters I would like to see have a chance at happiness and success.

He was filming The Giver in South Africa.

I really liked the second episode.

Emmy Rossum is so fantastic as Fiona. I really care for her character, and I would just be content with her sticking with this guy and being successful, but I know that’s wishful thinking. It’s television, after all.

Frank is in a scary place right now, and the show did well trying to balance the comedic bits with how dark his life is at the moment. Line of the night goes to Kev: “I got a magic dick!”. It’s too bad that there are ridiculously tough choices ahead for the couple. I like everything that’s going on with Lip right now, because his superhuman intelligence seemed unearned.

Overall, a better start than last season, mostly because they got rid of Jimmy. I wonder what Ian and/or Mickey were up to…

^I agree with all of the above. That scene with Kev in the hospital was hilarious. And you can never say enough good things about Rossum as Fiona. She is simply perfect. I’m also really interested in how Debbie’s and Carl’s storylines will pan out. Both are growing up and I like that the writers have never treated them like they were just kids.

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Well, that didn’t last long, did it?

I knew Fiona’s perfect romance was doomed from the start, but part of me wishes it didn’t have to end so soon, and to such a douchebag. There was a creepy foreboding tone to the episode with the introduction of her boyfriend’s brother. Similarly, the entire episode had an awkward feeling looming over it, which is no surprise considering the other two “forbidden sex” stories of the episode. The first, a potentially incestuous hookup between Frank and his unknowing daughter, was a little unbelievable for me because they had just met, and everything fell into place neatly. Like, only on a television show, neat.

The other one is of course Debbie and her (gay?) older boyfriend. But, turns out, he just wants to watch Eraserhead. I suppose we can all breathe a sigh of relief that the writers aren’t going in a rapey direction.

So, it’s saying quite a bit that Fiona’s hookup with douchebrother was the one that made me the most sick. YOU HAVE EVERYTHING, FIONA. WHY? Even though I have quibbles with the decision (why didn’t she suspect he was going to do this?), I really liked how she immediately regretted it, and played it off like her instincts took over. I don’t think I could handle her falling in love with this guy…

Oh well, at least it creates a central conflict for Fiona. It’s a credit to Emmy Rossum (the best leading lady on TV today) that I would rather watch the series have less seasons, and end on a happier note for Fiona, than see it continue on with more and more drama for this character. She is wonderful.

For example, after season after season of contrived melodrama, Meredith and Derek from Grey’s Anatomy were kept together. Maybe Fiona will have a stable relationship by season six or seven. Ehhh… who am I kidding? This is Shameless, after all.

OMG! I hate that Fiona cheated with such an asshole! Not that cheating with a nice guy is okay, but c’mon… Why him??
But I’m still loving her character even if she’s screwed up.  So far this season has been great.
