This project has been talked about for a long time on this site and on the 2018 Emmy Predictions thread but I couldn’t find a thread dedicated to it so here it is.

“Sharp Objects, the high-profile drama series project starring Amy Adams that was taken out by Entertainment One and Blumhouse in February, has landed at HBO with an eight-episode straight-to-series first season order. Based on the book by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, Sharp Objects has UnReal co-creator Marti Noxon as showrunner, Wild helmer Jean-Marc Vallée as director, and Flynn as a writer alongside Noxon.

Sharp Objects centers on reporter Camille Preaker (Adams) who, fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital, must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.”

The series will costar Patricia Clarkson as Adora Crellin, Eliza Scanlen as Camille’s half sister Amma, Madison Davenport as Meredith, Elizabeth Perkins as Jackie and Chris Messina as Detective Richard Willis.

Sharp Objects started filming on March 6, 2017 and there is no word yet on if they are still in production or not.

On July 31, 2017, author Gillian Flynn announced that Sharp Objects would air in June 2018, which means it would not be eligible for the 2018 Emmys.

I have not had a chance to read the book but I am confused on if it is a miniseries or a drama series. The announcement that came out in April 2016 via Deadline about HBO picking up the series for 8 episodes called it a “serialized drama” although I don’t know if Amy Adams would agree to multiple seasons of this show and I don’t know if the material even allows for more seasons like other TV shows adapted from books (Game of Thrones, Handmaid’s Tale, etc.) Maybe someone who has read the book could clarify this for me.

Also what do people think about HBO airing it in June? That’s a pretty risky move in regards to Emmy campaigns because it could be forgotten come the next cycle although some shows have been able to overcome summer release dates, most recently Stranger Things. How does this affect it’s awards chances?
