Hello fans of the The Wire! If this thread already exists somewhere, please point me to it, because I’ve been searching for a while with no luck. If there isn’t one, then welcome! I would like to say that I’ve created this thread so that fans of this great show could congregate and discuss, but truthfully I’ve made this for selfish reasons. I am a network in the ongoing Primetime Emmy Awards game run by bondzzz (who is doing a great job btw), and The Wire has been assigned to me! I am honored to represent this show and I hope to lead it to winning some well deserved awards, but there’s one problem. I haven’t seen much of the show! So I need some expert opinion. Right now all I need is categories, and only for the first season of the show. I’ve gathered that Dominic West should probably be submitted in lead, and that Michael K. Williams and Idris Elba would be strong supporting options. Is there anyone else? Guest actors/actresses? I also need to decide which episodes to submit for writing and directing. Let me know what you think! Even though I made this to get help, feel free to use this thread as a place to discuss all things involving The Wire. Thanks!

thanks I’ll keep that in mind for the season 3 round! Right now we’re just doing season 1 from every show, so can you think of any that would be strong nominees for The Wire from that year?

    Dominic West – The Hunt.

Dominic West’s only submission is “Sentencing” because he gets to cry in it.

    Michael B. Jordan for guest.

(I think that the capitalization might be in the wrong spot in the title of this thread.)

He cries in the episode after Kima gets shot too. He has the scene with Rawls where he is guilt riddled about it in the hospital.

My best advice is to watch the season.  It will give you the best sense of its strengths, and it’s also the greatest show ever made.

Larry Gilliard, Jr. has the best performance in Season 1, I think most fans would agree with that.  Elba and Williams don’t really have tapes that early in the series.  Most of the best potential acting submission material (Chris Bauer, Andre Royo, Idris Elba, James Ransone, Michael K. Williams) is after Season 1.

Dominic West, Lead Actor – “The Hunt”

Larry Gilliard Jr., Supporting Actor – “Cleaning Up” or “Sentencing”
Lance Reddick, Supporting Actor – “Cleaning Up”
Wood Harris, Supporting Actor – “The Pager”
Sonja Sohn, Supporting Actress – “The Cost”

Michael K. Williams, Guest Actor – “The Wire” (episode 6, not the pilot)
Michael B. Jordan, Guest Actor – “Cleaning Up”
J.D. Williams, Guest Actor – “Cleaning Up”
(These three guys were credited guest stars all season even though they appeared in 9-12 episodes.  Nonetheless, their screentime throughout the season is notably less than the four above who I listed as supporting)

    Writing
    “Cleaning Up”

    Directing
    “The Hunt” or “Cleaning Up”

Not sure how the Drama Series submissions are working but with the tape A B C format I’d go:

    The Buys/Old Cases
    The Cost/The Hunt
    Cleaning Up/Sentencing

At least watch “Cleaning Up”, I just listed it seven times as a potential submission and it’s got all the best stuff from Season 1.

I just recently rewatched the first season, actually.  But I forgot if it was the penultimate or the finale that I liked more for writing.

Larry Gilliard, Jr. does have the “Where’s Wallace, Stringer?” speech, for sure.

And Chris Bauer has a knockout tape in season 2.  A few actually.

This has got me thinking about the best acting tapes in later seasons.

Andre Royo, “Late Editions” (made me tear up)
    Chris Bauer, “Bad Dreams”
    Idris Elba, “Middle Ground”
    James Ransone, “Storm Warnings”
    J.D. Williams, “Final Grades”
Aidan Gillen, “Margin of Error” (the election)
Isiah Whitlock Jr., “Took” (Clay on the stand)

Not sure about West’s best episode.  Maybe “-30-“, the series finale.

“Cleaning Up” has the arrests, the “Where’s Wallace?” scene, and the actual Wallace scene.  The finale “Sentencing” is mostly legal loose ends, the standout scene being the interrogation of D’Angelo

Royo should’ve had an emmy for that episode.

Thanks so much for all the help everyone! This has been really helpful. @walteagle, I would love to watch the series all the way through and plan to eventually, but these submissions are due this Sunday lol, so that gives me a limited amount of time.
