It’s THE WIZ! Hmmm, okay then.

    NBC’s
    next live musical: “The Wiz”

Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY 4:27 p.m. EDT March 30, 2015

First came “The Sound of Music” and “Peter Pan.”

Next up for NBC: a live musical production of “The Wiz,”
airing on Dec.3, the network announced.

Instead of the vocal stylings of Allison Williams, this
show will be created in partnership with Cirque du Soleil. And it’s executive
produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the guys who brought us Neil Patrick
    Harris’ ill-advised Oscars hosting gig.

“The Wiz” will be then move to the Great White Way—it
will be presented as a Broadway revival for the 2016-17 season. Both the TV
production and the Broadway musical will be done with stage legend Harvey
Fierstein, who will contribute new material.

No cast members have been announced yet.

“The Wiz” is adapted from Frank L. Baum’s “The Wonderful
    Wizard of Oz.”

Ugh. I hate The Wiz. I bet Jennifer Hudson will be cast as she is turning out to be Craig and Neil’s muse performance twice at the Oscars and doing a guest spot for Smash

Instead of the Wizard of Oz? Interesting choice. I have as much interest in this, as I had in the last two (virtually none at all).

J-Hud will be the same age this year as Diana Ross was when “The Wiz” premiered (34). It is written lol.

But since J-Hud’s already committed to “The Color Purple” this fall on Broadway, this casting pretty much can’t happen unless that show is pushed back to Spring 2016.

I’m guessing they’re going to go much younger for the lead role of Dorothy. Keke Palmer comes to mind first. Condola Rashad has an extensive theater background. Or go even younger with someone like Zendaya (sigh).

Current pop stars who could fit the bill? This is too low-rent for Beyoncé or Rihanna. Brandy, perhaps? Janelle Monaé? This actress would need to be available for the Broadway show too, though the television cast doesn’t necessarily have to match with the Broadway cast (and I’m guessing won’t anyways). Hmmm. An unknown might be the way to go for the stage version, but a “name” will have to be picked for the television version.

    Other casting suggestions?

I just don’t know anyone that has watched these past two and said “wow that looks like so much fun”. Sound of Music was atrocious and Peter Pan was only bareable because Allison Williams is so talented. I don’t know why they just didn’t go with The Music Man like it was planned. At least that is a well written musical.

    Just some ideas for casting:

Dorothy: Amber Riley (For anyone who has no clue who she is, she is an incredible singer and even won DWTS)
Scarecrow: Bruno Mars (Its kinda made for him)
Tinman: Billy Porter (It would be a perfect choice)
Lion: Joshua Henry (Only person that I could think of)
Glinda: Tia Mowry (She gives a whole Glinda happy vibe)
Wicked Witch: Audra McDonald (becuase the witch is my fav chaarcter and she would KILL it).

Except that she is a horrendous actress and doesn’t have the star power of Underwood to overlook that

I think she was really good on Glee. They never really gave her anything super great plotwise after the whole record deal thing they gave her towards the end. I think she has about the same amount of star power as Allison Williams but agree that she hasnt reached Carrie Underwood level fame yet……but hopefully will eventually. She actually sang “Home” at something at the White House for something back in season one or season two of Glee. It’s definately worth a look if you like her voice (or even if you arent a fan).

I hope they do the Music Man at some point. Like you said, its one of the best written ones out there.

With the NBC connection, Tituss Burgess is a shoo-in for a role

Ooooh these casting choices are great! I would love to see Riley. Glee has a huge fanbase ever with the decline in ratings over the year so I’m pretty sure she has even more of a recognition than Allison Williams. Riley also won Dancing with the Stars so I think she is more known then most people think. I doubt Bruno would do it though he did host SNL so maybe but probably unlikely. It’s one thing for actors to commit to something like this but singers on tour have a harder time committing. Billy Porter would be excellent as well as Tituss. And Audra I bet would do it after Sound of Music

I hadn’t thought about Amber Riley. She did do a great job with “Home” on “Glee.” If they’re separating the casting for television with the stage version, then I guess she could work. She’s not a huge name like Carrie Underwood, but it’s not like Allison Williams is a household name either. If the same casting goes for both, I’d look to Condola Rashad (with the hopes that she can sing). Other Broadway vets like Billy Porter, Norm Lewis, and Audra McDonald would be great to see too. Too bad Patina Miller is stuck doing “Madam Secretary” currently.

Who gets to be Evillene and THE WIZ? Those are the more pressing questions lol. Harvey Fierstein is probably saving The Wiz for himself.
