Is anyone else watching Fox’s ‘Wayward Pines’, the shockingly good limited series executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (who directed the pilot episode and thankfully left writing duties to others)? This series takes obvious inspiration/influence from series like ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’, and even has shades of ‘The Truman Show’ and Shyamalan’s own ‘The Village’. The first two episodes have me hooked, and the mystery at hand is pretty fascinating. The pilot sets the tone and builds intrigue with Shyamalan reminding us that he’s actually a pretty damn good director, and maybe he’d do well to leave writing duties to others in the future. The cast is terrific across the board, which includes Matt Dillon, Juliette Lewis, Carla Gugino, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Toby Jones, and Shannyn Sossamon. The first two episodes give you a lot to chew on, and though some don’t like the reveal at the end of the first episode, I’m fine with it and I like what it means going forward as it opens the door for even more intrigue. Is anyone else watching, and if so what do you think? Personally, I think it at the very least blows ‘Gracepoint’ away…

I watched the first episode last night and it was actually good. The Nurse creeps me out….I gotta throw that out there. I think she is going to be one of the ones to keep an eye on. I didnt watch the 9:00 episode yet though.

Nearly everything is better than “Gracepoint”. Have you watched “Broadchurch”, the series that “inspired” Gracepoint. Just watch season 1, the second season was shockingly unsatisfying.

And yes, I watched Wayward Pines. I really liked the first episode. Melissa Leo, Juliette Lewis and Toby Jones are great in it.  The second episode was good too but I hope it gets better and more intriguing. Not sure about the sub-plot with his wife and son.

I wasn’t expecting (SPOILER ALERT) the death of Juliette Lewis’s character at the end of episode 2, which I was kinda disappointed in because I really liked her and I thought she gave a great performance.   (END SPOILERS)

Melissa Leo is excellent as Nurse Pam, her character is so unnerving. I also think Matt Dillon has been great so far, as has Carla Gugino and Terrence Howard. Gugino’s scene with Dillon on the porch in the pilot episode was fantastic. I didn’t go into this series with very high expectations, but I’m very surprised at how much I’m enjoying it so far.

    M. Night watched another TV show and said “ooh I want to make a lesser version of that!” again

Maybe… In his defense, this isn’t really HIS show, and the source material is a book series. It’s enjoyable for what it is, and it’s fun.

I think I am hooked! Truman Show with Twin Peaks and The Village. Everyone acting like hostages with Stockholm syndrome a little. Very strange.

I love this show as well! So glad Carla Gugino has found such an interesting role. Totally agree with the (Spoiler) Juliette Lewis comments, maybe she only signed on for two episodes becuase she had to film secrets and lies….but she still gave an amazing performance in those two episodes!! (End Spoilers)

Matt Dillon has been great as well, and good for Terence Howard to be in the show to help his Empire chances during emmy voting!

I don’t think this will be available until next emmy round though right? Which makes its chances nearly impossible becuase many will forget about it…unless it pops up in the globes. It is an event series so I assume that means limited series, and that it won’t be coming back next year.

Oh, yeah, I think you’re right.. It’ll only have 3 episodes out by month end and I think it will have needed to air 6…

Dillon, Lewis, Gugino, Howard, Jones, and Leo… all terrific and should be in the Emmy conversation, IMHO. It’ll be a shame if they are forgotten about.

Also, does anyone know whose voice that is as the “new employee” at the secret service that Dillon’s character speaks to? It kind of sounded like Susan Sarandon…

Well episode three held quite the unexpected death. And what the hell was that thing that took the body away?

Though a short performance, Terrance Howard was great on the show. I think it might help him get a nomination for Empire.

This explains why this weeks death happened, and possibly could explain why last weeks death happened (secret’s and lies??)

Two great actors gone already, I hope they don’t kill everyone off too soon! excited for Hope Davis to come in sometime soon!

Excellent Episode. The show is very unpredictable. I like the family drama of and how the affairs baggage hangs over everything.

I’m still pretty meh about this show. It seems like it is trying waaaay too hard. But Hope Davis has definitely stolen the show for me. I could care less about anyone else now she is excellent.

The last episode was a trip… I’ve already started going through things in my head and how they may or may not be possible… But anyway, HOPE DAVIS. She killed it in both episodes she’s been in so far. I’m also really intrigued by Toby Jones and his performance is really interesting; you can’t tell if he’s being genuine or if he’s leading Burke along. I’m still not sold entirely on the big reveal of this last episode, but it’s certainly a fascinating direction to go in and makes me wonder how this will all play out. I genuinely have no idea what will happen next.

When Hope Davis did that big reveal, all I could think of was M. Night in this Robot Chicken skit
