Finally, Okja premiered on Netflix on June 28, after some controversy at the last edition of Cannes. I just watched it and I thought that it was a wonderful movie that deserved to be seen on the big screen.
Sadly, it is ineligible for the oscars, but it could sneak at Golden Globe, SAG and of course the emmys, do you think it has a chance there?
Where did you here it wasn’t Oscar eligible?
To be eligible, the movie can not be shown simultaneously with the TV, only with a minimum of one week later. Now it’s eligible for Emmys, not Oscars.
Pretty sure Netflix did the NY/LA qualifying run for Okja – they have an exclusive deal with iPic theaters to make sure that their movies can qualify for Oscar. I’d be shocked if they weren’t mounting an enormous Oscar campaign for both this and Mudbound. They are extremely salty that Amazon broke through in the top categories before they did but I really don’t think their release model will yield many (if any) nominations for this or anything else.
It’s absolutely Oscar-eligible. Netflix carefully placed the film in prime art theaters in New York and Los Angeles and placed large ads in support of “Okja’s” multi-week run there. They’re planning the same strategy for the newly acquired “Mudbound” in November.
