I had a nice long thread about this series but when I went to post it, it completely disappeared. [Reminder: Copy everything before clicking ‘post’ at Gold Derby!]

    So basically…

    • Season 1 marathon is on BBC America today from 12/11c.
    • Season 1 finale is on tonight at 9/8c. [It is still Emmy-eligible due to the hanging-episode rule.]
    • It has been renewed for a second season.
    • Tatiana Maslany is nominated for Best Actress at the 3rd Annual Television Critics Choice Awards, along with Claire Danes, Vera Farmiga, Julianna Margulies, Elisabeth Moss, and Keri Russell.
    • Sporasdic posts here at Gold Derby + an interview on EW Radio yesterday made me interested in giving it a shot. I watched the pilot last night and it was pretty great.

I binge-watched the entire season today. It’s carzy but in a good way.
Tatiana Maslany definitely deserves more recognition. And it feels like she could submit any of the 10 episodes for Lead and Supporting…

    BUMP.

Tatiana Maslany won the Television Critics Choice Award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series in what I consider the shock of the night.

    Derbyites, watch this show!

Not to mention she got in the TCA today. Are people really underestimating her chances?

I didn’t think it was that shocking. It was a critics’ award.

This will be the next series I’ll give a try — lots of love for Tatiana Maslany.

I binge-watched this a week ago. Maslany is as great as they say.

Okay. Honestly, what are Maslany’s odds at the Emmy nomination? Is there a FYC campaign for her? Are screeners being sent out? This is an interesting discussion. Has there ever been a type of grassroots campaign for a little-known actor before that’s been successful?

Was it just me or did the season kind of taper off toward the end. I was much more impressed with Maslany’s performance in the earlier episodes (strangely, before she started playing more and more characters) because I found the writing and plotting to be better. I think the twistiness sometimes overwhelmed her great performance, but maybe that was just me?

I absolutely LOVED the first three or so episodes and then after that I just loved them. See what I mean?

It actually took me a few episodes to get into the gimmick. There were a couple too many twists in the final few installments. However, the penultimate episode was the season’s best and the best showcase for Manslany.

I watched all 10 episodes today and from good buzz of the show I was expecting to be blown away. The show started off quite slow and once Helena came into the picture because the show took a dramatic turn. My favourite episode was the ninth episode because of all the emotions everyone went through and how well it was performed by Maslany. I could see why people would want to reward her but I’m not sure if she’ll make me personal top six yet.

    Season Grade: B+

I agree wholeheartedly with all of this. I thought the show started off pretty strong and had some real great endings and cliffhangers between episodes (not that it mattered to me, because I was binge watching them, but I appreciated that aspect of the plotting), but I found the back half of the season to be wanting. I never connected with the other clones the way I did with Sarah or Sarah as Beth. And the final reveal that they were patented felt sort of anti-climactic to me.

I think Maslany’s performance is great but I don’t think she’s the best this season at all. There’s something about intricately and delicately crafting a single character that appeals to me more than the type of broad strokes they painted with all those other characters (not entirely a fault of hers, the writing tended to be kind of broad for me in that aspect). Both require great nuance and skill but I just prefer the former over the latter.

I feel like this show has suffered from the hype surrounding Maslany’s performance. The accolades are deserved and I think she has great things ahead of her (she was actually just signed by an American management company today, so fortuitous timing) but I do feel people have gotten carried away.

The poster you quoted made the exact opposte argument you did, saying they didn’t care for the beginning of the season but enjoyed the final few episodes. Then you said, “I agree”.

Maslany is my number one dramatic performance of the season mainly due to the season’s final few episodes. I don’t think it’s one of the greatest TV performances ever. I think Danes and Russell would be worthy of winning the Emmy. I could see this show quickly falling apart in its second season, and Maslany never being worthy again. However, she’s extremely worthy for this season. I think some are getting over the top, but she does at the very least a nomination. It seems you might be getting a lil scared her getting in could cost your precious Danes. I mean weren’t you just going coo-coo for Maslany just a couple days ago?
