Can someone please explain what the hell has happened to Halle Berry’s career?

She wins an Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” in 2001 and then steals the next Bond movie, “Die Another Day.” And throughout the decade, she headlines “X-Men,” a hugely successful film franchise.

Sure, she made a huge mistake with “Catwoman,” but even then she had fun with that, showing up to collect her Razzie. And her more serious fare, such as “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Frankie and Alice,” were respectable enough.

I suppose after starring in “The Call” in 2013, Berry realized her movie prospects were limited so she snapped up the chance to star on “Extant.” She and the show are fine summer fun but it is surprising, at least to me, that Berry is not in a more prestigious TV series.

First of all the title of the thread looked like it would have other examples of Oscar winners who for some “Curse” got sent to summer television.

Second, you’re giving Halle waaaay too much credit, when she really only deserves two: Monster’s Ball and Things We Lost…Other than that she (and her wigs) could potentially be the worst part of the X-Men films, so many other black actresses with white wigs could’ve done better, and she didn’t steal anything from anybody on Die Another Day.

You’re also giving the idea of Extant very little credit and treating television like an inferior thing when so many others have succeeded with it. This show looked like it could be a good thing and being on summer television and 13 episodes long would’ve still allowed any actor to do other stuff as other actors (even in 24 episode shows) have done before. She was also going to be paid for this much more than any film would’ve paid her. So everything looked great, not necessarily prestigious, but it looked nothing like a “curse”.

But of course the show sucked (many that look good end up sucking) and Berry is a pretty bad actress who gets lucky sometimes (Monsters Ball) but didn’t quite do it for anybody this time.

    So there’s no curse here.

Her movies RARLEY perform well at the box office. I’m pretty sure she only took on this role was because Steven Speilberg is one of the Ex Producers. This show is boring…CBS needs to cancel and Halle needs to get on another show that is well written!

What movie has Halle SOLEY STARRED since winning an Oscar that didn’t perform well at the box office (other than Catwoman)??? The Call was an independent/low budget that SHE produce and it performed VERY well a the box office $69 million. Pretty good for a movie with a budget of 13 million.

And surely you don’t really believe she went back to television because of a failing career? lol She went because Extant is produce by SS and it’s only 3 months to film, she was able to become a producer and make over $150,00/episode, AND Still do movies. Why wouldn’t she take the job? She said she also like the script and the fututristic elements of the  show.

Halle’s new movie Kidnapped is hitting theaters in October and another is coming in Jan, I believe. Idon’t see this “curse” you speak of. Especially when she’s producing as well.  She’s always working when she wants to. She took time off to be with her daughter when she was born. and Halle commands 10million  or more a film now – she’s doing better than all of us. lol

^ Halle can still command $10 million or more per movie? No, honey, just no. LOL The last time she’s got paid that much money was in 2007 for that shitty movie “Perfect Stranger”. It flopped hard in box office so as a result her days in eight figure club have ended. The only actresses who can still command such money are Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson (thanks to Lucy becoming such a huge box office hit), Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa McCarthy (although that one is a big star only domestically).

Maybe Halle Berry could have picked a more prestigious television starring vehicle for herself (I think I read that she turned down “Homeland,” for example, which in hindsight was a big mistake), but “Extant” is watchable enough with a fine reboot episode last week. She’s perfectly fine in it, and it’s pretty much the trajectory of actresses of any color her age now to make the transition from film to television. She tried being the “box office star” to cash out post-Oscar win, and I guess I can’t fault her for trying to make money as long as she was commercially viable. If there’s a “curse” to be found, it’s in picking bad projects and not looking at the bigger picture. I can’t even begin to make excuses for the horrific “Catwoman.” Personally, I’d rather seen Halle go the indie route and hone her many talents as a character actress. Even with those hits and misses, I think she’s carved out a fine career, and she will always be a historic Oscar winner. She has nothing to prove to anyone anymore in that regard. I’m hoping she sticks with television in the coming years and finds at least one more starring film role that’s truly worthy of her talents.

You don’t know when she last got paid 10 million LOL.  She was just in X-Men last year and you don’t think she got her “fee” you are sadly mistaken. Of course she didn’t make 10 million on the few independent projects, but her command is STILL there. Don’t kid yourself. Halle is still in the commanding business. Like I said, Halle is STILL a box office draw therefore her fee is still the same. Just look at the movies you may think bombed and look at the overall gross… they have all returned great for the studio. She is an A-list. and she gets paid accordingly.

And I wouldn’t call making $73 million at the box office (Perfect Stranger) FLOPPING HARD $30 Million Budget

Let me list the Box Office Numbers for those who are misinformed:

    2014-X-Men: Days of Future – $748 million
    2013-The Call – $70 million ( 15 million budget)
    2012-Cloud Atlas ( even though it wasn’t just a halle film) – $130 million
2011-New Years Eve ( big cast) $142 million (56 million budget)
    2005 – Robots ( Animation) $260 million ( Budget 75 million)
    2006-X-Men: The Last Stand  – $460 million
    2004-Catwoman ( FLOP) 82 million ( budget 100 million)
    2003- Gothika $81 million ( budget 40 million)
    2003- XMen United- $407 million
    2002- Die Another Day $ 432 Million
    2001- Monsters Ball – $44 million ( Budget 4 million)
    2001- Swordfish – $147 million ( Budget 100 million)
    2000- X-Men -$296 million ( Budget 75 million)

So how people can say that her movies don’t make money is ludacris! She had 1 MAJOR flopped, but as you can see that didn’t stop from being able to still command her fee. Halle is 50 next month and is now a mom of 2 young children, so of course her film choices are changing from how it was before.  The most people can say is that they didn’t like the movie therefore they “FELT” like it was a flop, but the reality is her movies make money. A lot of it!

I don’t think her career is over just because she’s on a summer television series. She said in an interview that she wanted to do tv and film at the same time, and Extant is giving her the opportunity to do that. Also, every african american actress is struggling right now in film, and Halle Berry is the only black actress to have big box office sucesses. Great female roles are very limited for black actresses in hollywood.

RIGHT! What other Black Actrees out there has had Box office success like Halle?  Jennifer Lopez ( I know she isn’t black, but she’s a minority) have box office success, but she’s also had her flops ( way more than Halle) and she’s STILL a draw.  I don’t people saying that Jennifer is a Flop at box office lol

She’s an Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, AND Oscar WINNER! I don’t think there really anything else for her to prove. So if she want to play in TV for the summer… have at it and make that money!

Her career is pretty meh these days, but she’s had one hell of a run. When you look back at her career, it’s amazing how she’s lasted as long as she has when she’s never been viewed as one of the better actresses out there.

Halle is a good actress, and few african american actresses had the career that she had during the 00’s. Which african-american actresses are bigger than her in these days? Viola Davis, and that’s it. It’s also a industry problem, maybe she should’ve accepted the role of Olivia Pope even though it would require more of her time.

Great female roles in films are limited for actresses over 30 period.

Yeah, that explains why Jennifer Lawrence is the only actress getting great roles right now.
