I’m looking for examples of times when an actor or show had what you consider to be a near perfect tape, that for some reason was not submitted.

One example that comes to mind is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss not submitting “Oh, God Yes” for New Christine. She went with “Playdate with Destiny” instead and lost.   I believe had she put forth “Oh, God Yes”, she would have won that Emmy.

What are some other examples of submissions so perfect you cannot believe they weren’t submitted?

I hate to sound like a broken record, but one of the biggest mistakes of this kind was Mary-Louise Parker overlooking “No Man Is Pudding.”  It was the difference between Emmy and no-Emmy, and she blew it.

You sound like a broken record because submission threads are in now. Everywhere you look there’s one (and I’m not talking about this year’s Emmys).

Dreyfus and Oh God Yes against Ugly Betty’s Pilot for Ferrara? America Ferrara is still the winner there and I love Christine A LOT and I also think Oh God Yes is a good tape. But Dreyfus was lucky she won when she did and it’s not like Christine got bigger as it went along, she wasn’t going to win again and if she was, it should’ve been for White Like Me which I believe she didn’t submit, but it would have gone against Toni Collette and Tara’s Pilot anyway.

Alec Baldwin not going with Jack-Tor for Season 1 of 30 Rock was a big mistake.

I think “Playdate With Destiny” was an excellent submission, and I was actually very pleased that she chose it.  “Oh, God Yes” would have made a decent choice for the physical comedy in the church scene, but “Playdate With Destiny” seemed to have more winning factors; it has physical comedy (though not as much) and it also features a ritzy party with the characters in semi-black tie, appealing to the “snob-factor” that Tom often talks about, as well as some great JLD self-depricating moments (like introducing Barb and Mr. Harris).  I think “Playdate” is one of the highlights from Season 2.

“White Like Me” would have been a good submission, but nothing would have been better that year than “The Old Maid of Honor,” which was both really funny and had a lot of heart. If only JLD and MLP had submitted better (that was the same year MLP should have submitted “No Man Is Pudding”) we would have had a really competitive race!

Talking about “Old Christine” submissions, I’ve always thought “House” was much better than “One and a Half Man”, which she submitted in season 3. Not that would make much difference, though, that year was Fey’s.

I think “House” was great, and should have ended up as a Series submission, but no way is it a better submission than “One and a Half Men,” which couldn’t have been a better choice for her.  Many people here at Gold Derby have listed it in their top female comedic performances of the decade (I can’t recall if that thread was at this forum or back a few years ago when GD Forum was with LA Times).

That episode had everything, and was only topped by Tina Fey’s combination of good submission, and insurmountable acclaim.

Yes! That takes the cake!  Nobody could believe she didn’t submit that. It was almost as if she decided “Nahhh, I don’t want to win an Emmy this year…”

The only time apart from season one of New Christine that JLD was competitive was season three, and only because she went with One and a Half Men, anything else and she would’ve been a non-factor (and I really liked her in the show). Most years, her best choices didn’t rival what the winner or the other nominees had. Even in season three, I thought Fey had the best submission and the best season-long performance and deserved to win.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
    – Tina Fey: 2007, “The C Word” (maybe could have beaten America Ferrera)
    – Mary-Louise Parker: 2009, “No Man is Pudding” (tossup between she and eventual winner, Toni Collette)

I think that Marc Cherry had something to do with the Desperate Housewives submissions because he probable wanted Dixie Carter to win.  Dixie gave Marc one of his first jobs in the business.

Julia Louis Dreyfuss did not deserve her 2006 Emmy, but was more Emmy worthy in later years for that show.  Based on the submissions, that Lead Actress in a Comedy Emmy should have gone to Jane Kaczmarek for Malcolm In The Middle.
