If Ms. Janney, or any of her “people” read this, please consider switching back to the supporting category.

I wrote an article a few months back about how Janney would be a lock for a nomination in the supporting category, and would most likely win her 5th Emmy. Janney had so many things in her favor.  She had at least two killer submissions that would blow away the competition.  She plays the kind of supporting role that Emmy voters love–a menopausal middle aged addict with a foul mouth and no filter.

But the news that Janney is being submitted in the Lead Actress her chances have been drastically reduced.  She now has to compete with the likes of Amy Poehler, Melissa McCarthy, and Edie Falco, all of whom have a history of competitive submissions.

And there’s the iceberg in Janney’s path that is Julia Louis Dreyfus.  Julia has four Emmy wins and is 2-2 for Veep, a show that only seems to gather both Emmy wins and buzz with each season.  Dreyfus’s popularity is at an all time high this year.  Voters and viewers LOVE watching her give acceptance speeches. That is quite an obstacle.

Perhaps most significantly, Janney’s presence in the Lead category creates direct competition with her co-star, Anna Faris, who herself has been doing some really fine Emmy-worthy work on “Mom.”  With Janney in the race, there is a chance that Faris would be left out.  With Janney in the supporting race, Faris has a much better shot at a nomination.

I really hope the powers-that-be reconsider.

And I honestly think she is a supporting character. A very large supporting character, probably even borderline lead but no more than that. And I’m one of the people who’s fine with a borderline performance going supporting if it means more deserving performances getting in

Yeah 100% agreed. Even though I love Merritt Weaver on Nurse Jackie (Last year’s winner), I don’t think she could have stopped Janney from winning this year. But this year’s actress race is really Dreyfus V.S. Poehler so I can’t see her winning that. But don’t feel too bad for her because she is more than likely to win Best Guest Actress Drama for Masters of Sex unless someone comes out of no where sometime in the next 2 months

It’s a smarter idea to go Supporting than Lead. I mean she could win if she’s in Supporting, and finally beat out those Modern Family women.

I think you mean Julie Bowen…who lost last year anyways.

Here’s something I can’t help but consider: She’s more of a lead on Mom than she ever was on The West Wing and that didn’t stop her from submitting there and WINNING there. Much like at the Oscars, Janney or her team might think a Lead Emmy is more significant than a Supporting Emmy, but it’s really not any different. Of course, she didn’t have any other actresses from her show to compete with in lead, and that’s where, I think, there’s a big difference. Mom is undoubtedly Anna Faris’ show, and even if Janney has big moments and a lot of screentime, the show isn’t really about her.

And with JLD, Poehler, Dunham and Falco as pretty safe bets, plus Schilling now, there’s pretty much only one spot left, and there’s no way they’re gonna go with Anna Faris over 4x Emmy winner Allison Janney. They’re just not. So Janney would be preventing her co-star, the true lead, from getting a nomination, when both of them could easily score noms if they were in different categories!

I really hope this isn’t an ego thing like Rob Lowe having to submit in Lead for every show he’s ever been on even when he isn’t anywhere close to being a lead.

I also am starting to wonder if it’s an ego thing. I mean, all those lead nominations and wins for The West Wing were ridiculous and stopped real leads (such as, say, Jennifer Garner) from winning.

Yes! Go supporting actress instead of lead actress, please!

Watch our interview with Allison Janney from November (in video folder). She never had an opinion and allowed the show producers to submit her wherever they wanted. The main reason they moved her to lead was to allow Stockard Channing (who won) and the others to get nominations. They also didn’t have a lead actress other than possibly her, so it opened up a new category for them.

By the way, her rep just responded. The article yesterday was wrong. She is staying in supporting, and they never moved her.

What I mean is that Modern Family is such an awards juggernaut, regardless of Bowen losing last year (which was probably just a fluke, by the way) that I would like most of the awards this year to have a little more variety.
