As I do every year, I need the help of my GoldDerby pals in this year’s Emmy voting. As an Emmy voter in the Writers Branch, I am overwhelmed each May with screeners from drama shows that I haven’t had time to watch this season. I’m asking you to offer the ONE drama script that you would cheer if it got a nod on nomination day. Please don’t give me a list of two or three scripts — I’m looking for help on the ONE about which you feel most passionate. As always, thank you all in advance for your help on this — my goal is to submit the most responsible ballot I can, and I couldn’t do it without you. Thanks.May 23, 2016 at 10:06 am #1201840140
Well, I would consider last night’s Game of Thrones episode a good contender. A lot of great stuff there, ending with the Hodor stuff.May 23, 2016 at 10:08 am #1201840141
Bates Motel, “Forever”
Balls the size of Texas to do what they did in that episode when they did it. A terrific build-up to an iconic event, and the show took it in its own direction.May 23, 2016 at 10:16 am #1201840143
This one is easy.
“Episode 3” (Horace and Pete). Louis CK and Laurie Metcalf just talk for an hour, and it’s probably the best TV episode of the year.May 23, 2016 at 10:40 am #1201840161

For me, the best written drama of the year was “The Same Boat,” an episode of The Walking Dead scripted by Angela Kang.
In a self contained hour drama dominated by female characters, Kang explores the nature of women in desperate circumstances. She reveals complexities by allowing minimal exposition as the actresses convey emotions in gesture and expression. It is a masterful piece of writing within a genre.May 23, 2016 at 8:01 pm #1201840376
