This year it seems like there are many programs that are only nominated in the acting categories. “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Shameless” and “The Affair” come to mind, what what else is there? Is it unusual for shows to only contend in the acting races? What are some other recent examples where this has happened?

The third season of Damages is the ultimate example:
    Lead Actress
    Supporting Actor
    Supporting Actress
    Guest Actor
    Guest Actress

Add “The Last Man on Earth” to the list of programs this year only up for acting.

I believe the Linda Bloodworth comedy series Evening Shade earned no Emmy recognition except for a total of nine acting wins and nominations for five different players during its entire four season run.

The second season of Justified is another big one: Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress (win), Guest Actor. What is ironic is that it got non-acting nominations the year before and the year after. Most of the comedies and dramas listed above actually got other nominations at some point, but not these ones:

    Baskets (2016): 1 nomination
    Derek (2014, 2015): 2 nominations
    Enlightened (2013): 2 nominations
    Getting On (2015, 2016): 3 nominations
    Samantha Who? (2009; also 2008): 3 nominations, 1 win
The Sarah Silverman Program (2009): 1 nomination

    The Affair (2016): 1 nomination
    Bloodline (2015, 2016): 4 nominations
    The Cleaner (2010): 1 nomination
    The Closer (2009, 2010, 2011; also 2006, 2007, 2008): 7 nominations, 1 win
    Harry’s Law (2011, 2012): 4 nominations, 1 win
    Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2009, 2010, 2011; also 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008): 25 nominations, 6 wins
    Men of a Certain Age (2010, 2011): 2 nominations
    The Mentalist (2009): 1 nomination
    Orphan Black (2015, 2016): 2 nominations
    Parenthood (2012): 1 nomination
    Scandal (2013, 2014, 2015): 6 nominations, 2 wins

Out of curiosity I looked up the opposite, multi-time Series nominees with 0-1 acting nominees over their runs (or so far):
52-62 Red Skelton Hour, Skelton [variety show]
    56-61 Jack Benny Show, Benny
70-71 Love American Style n/a [anthology show]
    72-73 Sanford and Son, Foxx
    05-06 Scrubs, Braff (1)
    11-15 Parks and Recreation, Poehler
    14-16 Silicon Valley, Middleditch (1)
So after 4 decades, Scrubs came in. And now we have 1-2 recent shows following in the footsteps. Weird.

51-52 Pulitzer Prize Theatre n/a [anthology show]
    51-55 Philco-Goodyear, Marie-Saint (1) [anthology show]
52-53 Celanese Theatre n/a [anthology show]
52-54 Robert Montgomery Presents n/a [anthology show]
56-59 Alfred Hitchcock Presents n/a [anthology show]
    67-68 Star Trek, Nimoy
    67-68 Avengers, Rigg
    78-81 Quincy ME, Klugman
    80-81 White Shadow n/a
    82-84 Fame, Allen
    02-04 CSI, Helgenberger
Hmm, so only CSI in over 3 decades. I’m surprised it didn’t get a random guest nom. I mean, Without a Trace even won Guest Actor.
