So I have a question about the final season of The Closer and its eligibility. I know the Emmy’s have in place the “hanging” episode rule, where if a show airs at least 6 (I believe) episodes of its current season by May 31, the remaining episodes of that season are eligible for Emmy consideration in the same year.
Which leads me to my question: The Closer has aired 15 episodes so far this year, and is airing six new episodes later this summer. The 6 episodes that are going to air this summer will be part of the seventh season. So, does that mean Kyra Sedgwick (and the show) is not eligible for Emmy consideration in 2013, as the new six episodes will be part of season 7??
According to the rules, the hanging episodes must air in a “contiguous rollout on the same distribution platform”. They specifically say that they must be “part of the series season” and “air subsequently”. Also, they “must air prior to the return of the first round ballots”.
“The Closer” will be eligible in 2013. These final six episodes will air months after the previous episode (airing in December and then July is not airing subsequently) and after the return of the first round ballots (voting for nominations ends in late June), so the rule doesn’t apply here.
