The premiere aired earlier tonight.August 7, 2017 at 12:09 am #1202177097
Good episode. I like the time jump. I really like how the whole episode was mysterious throughout.
Only two metacritic scores, a 75 and an 80.
I can’t believe Abby died!!! It was so unexpected!! Paula Malcomson is coming for that guest actress Emmy nomination. I really thought she’d surprise everybody and get a supporting nomination this year.
Liev Schriber was bringing his A-game. He was great.
And OMG Adina Porter was in this!!! I don’t know how many episodes she’ll be in but I love her in anything so in a perfect world she’s get a meaty role and get a guest nomination.
Michael Gill is listed as being in 6 episodes on IMDB so unless the rules change or IMDB is wrong he will be in 1 to many episodes for guest.
Susan Sarandon was good with what she had. Hopefully she’ll actually get some good material unlike on FEUD.
I loved the music supervision in this episode.
Jon Voight did absolutely nothing in this episode.
This episode wasn’t one of the best Ray Donovan episodes, but in my opinion it was much better than last season’s premiere. This was a good start and I am excited for the season to come.
I find it interesting that Malcomson had second billing even though she was barely in the episode.
My grade: B
MVP: Liev SchriberAugust 7, 2017 at 12:48 am #1202177106
I. Did. Not. See. That. Coming.
Heartbroken. And. Shocked.
Btw she’s pulling Vera Farmiga. She’ll stay regular for the rest of the season.August 7, 2017 at 8:26 am #1202177402
Just finished watching this and all I have to say is this: That’s the best season opener they have ever had. My grade: AAugust 7, 2017 at 9:11 pm #1202178083
Crazy that I didn’t even know this was coming back. I don’t bother much with Showtime anymore. They just aren’t in the game or worth a damn now with Netflix and Amazon on the rise and HBO still being HBO. Anyways. Interesting season premiere. Pretty ballsy killing off Abby, and then doing an opaque episode like this where you don’t bother to explain the circumstances surrounding her death except in odd teases. I’ve discussed many times before my views on Ray’s immediate family bringing the show down. I would have axed Abby and the kids years ago. “Ray Donovan” is best with Liev Schreiber full throttle as Ray with his cases and dealing with his brothers and shitty father. I was halfway excited about Bridget and Conor being sent away (finally!), but it looks like they will still get ample screentime. I wonder if Paula Malcomson is in flashbacks all season long. The setup for the season-long case could have been written better, but I’m sort of intrigued by it. Susan Sarandon? I’d forgotten about this casting. Nice career resurgence along with “Feud,” and she’s looking absolutely stunning for 70! Adina Porter too? Love it. Wish better intros happened for Mickey, Bunchy, and Daryl. Terry though, that worked well. Eddie Marsan does so much with so little. Ready for season 5, bitches! I’ve needed my summer shows back for some time now.August 7, 2017 at 11:40 pm #1202178206
he’ll stay regular for the rest of the season.
Is that confirmed? I hope not just because I want her to get an Emmy nomination. Guest is realistic but she has no chance in supporting.
The showrunner has already confirmed with TVLine that she’ll stay regular.August 7, 2017 at 11:43 pm #1202178210
Based on the interview it seems like she will be guest eligible next season.August 13, 2017 at 9:28 pm #1202184366
I relly love the artistic direction that this season is taking. It seems to be even better than season 3. This season might even make my personal list for the first time. No Susan Sarandon. Maybe she’ll qualify in guest. Malcomson better hope so because this’ll logically be her last season as a regular and she was really good in this episode. The Emmys nominate this show when its good. They snubbed it last year because it wasn’t good. This season is good. So I expect it to go up in nominations as long as it stays good.
This episode wasn’t as good as the premiere but it was solid. I’ll give it a B-.August 14, 2017 at 9:58 am #1202184809
Malcomson has really stepped up her game, she was terrific, this season is just good right from the get go, judging by the preview, we know she has to go through Chemo, so hopefully the material will be fantastic for her.August 14, 2017 at 6:23 pm #1202185164
Going to watch this now. I’m hyped up on cotton candy at the moment so lets see how long I last before I crash.August 14, 2017 at 10:55 pm #1202185385
This felt like it was better than the season premiere, but I don’t care for the fractured time narrative seemingly a thing all season long, or what looks to be a complete arc with Abby’s cancer that’s going to be exhausting to watch. I didn’t think they would go to the trouble of killing Abby off just to have Paula Malcomson in every single episode this season. That’s overkill, but whatever. Liev Schreiber brings so much to a role that can’t be all that much on paper. So good! Terry’s Vegas storyline was off to me, like why was he sidetracked from the fight in the first place to even go to the brothel drunk? But for the line of the year (“the safe word is ANAL!”), I guess I’ll give that a pass lol. The season-long case seems weak and retreaded at first glance, but Susan Sarandon made quite an impression last episode, so I’m hoping for the best from all of that. I’m also wondering how/if they’ll bring back Hank Azaria for his annual guest actor Emmy nomination next year. Don’t know how he would fit into this season’s narrative, but anything’s possible, after all.August 15, 2017 at 10:57 am #1202185832
This epiosde wasn’t as good in my opinion. My grade: BAugust 21, 2017 at 3:37 pm #1202191194
Pretty slow start to the season so far. Usually they’re guns blazing by now, but this is decidedly not that. The fractured time narrative isn’t something the show has ever done that well. The hot young J-Law actress stand-in has the charisma of a limp noodle. It was completely telegraphed that Ray would bone her by episode’s end, and sure enough, he did just that. Bunchy’s thread looks like it’s picking up soon, as well as Mickey and Daryl’s with Avi. Not sure why they had Terry marry so quickly or cheat on her in the way that he did. Paula Malcomson was only used briefly here, and it was sadly effective. Need Susan Sarandon back on pronto to infuse the proceedings with some gravitas, stature, and glamour!
