So, I just read the news that an old Gold Derby commenter of ours, Renaton, has passed away. He hadn’t been around in a while (March 22nd is his last recorded log-in here), but given his past contributions, I thought that his passing merited its own thread (if it’s in the wrong place, my apologies).
Renaton was one of my favorite posters on Gold Derby, and maybe even my single favorite poster. I interacted with him a lot here and in the comments sections at the AV Club and The Dissolve, and he always came off as a hell of a guy with a
strong personality. What I liked most about him was how relatively sober and detailed his analysis could be. There were some threads I’d wade through where it
appeared like he was literally the only sane man. That could lead to arguments sometimes, but through it all, he conveyed an incredible intelligence and passion that I greatly appreciated as I was first acclimating to this site. He truly helped to make the discussions worthwile.
What a great individual. I
really missed seeing him around, and am so sorry to hear about his passing. Rest in Peace.July 27, 2015 at 11:16 pm #356418
RIP. He was frequently insightful and always polite.July 27, 2015 at 11:31 pm #356419
He really was a great poster — always up for a good debate, and very thorough and insightful. I, too, appreciated his contributions to The Dissolve.
This is just incredibly sad…July 28, 2015 at 12:21 am #356420
Oh damn, this is really so sad. I really, really, really liked Renaton. I remember he was always so kind but fiery, and his opinions were powerful but interesting. This is a great loss for GoldDerby 🙁July 28, 2015 at 3:10 am #356421
I talked about this with Madson and I was just about to create a thread. This is just devastating. I like people who have something to say no matter what the topic in question is and Renaton was most certainly one of those people. Very insightful, very clever… Its a sad loss. I’m sure his memories will remain forever. RIP Renaton.July 28, 2015 at 3:30 am #356422
Horrible news. I always enjoyed reading his posts. He shared strong opinions and knew how to debate. Huge loss for the community.
His last two posts:
Tonight I’m Getting Over You would have been a
#1 single if people hadn’t already decided that Carly Rae Jepsen should
be a one-hit wonder.
I agree XO should’ve been a huge hit and that it feels like one.
I also think it’s weird “I’m a Slave 4 U” didn’t get to #1.
And I know the public had massively dropped their support for them after
Geri left the group, but I think it’s weird how Goodbye and Holler
weren’t big hits in most markets. Those are songs begging to be big
hits, even if they were coming from the Spice Girls after the popularity
decline.July 28, 2015 at 4:59 am #356423
Are we allowed to ask how? This is so shocking.
He was a really intelligent poster and knew how to debate. I didn’t interact with him a lot on here, but I enjoyed our exchanges nonetheless and always liked reading his opinions. RIP.July 28, 2015 at 5:35 am #356424
This shocked me so much when I saw the title of the thread. Renaton was a very cool and intelligent person. Although we didn’t always agree, I think we still had a mutual respect for each other. He looked kinda young, so it’s even sadder to hear that he passed. May he rest in peace.July 28, 2015 at 6:07 am #356425
R.I.P Renaton he was a really cool guy who I had the pleasure to talk to and he will always be one of Gold Derbys best posters.July 28, 2015 at 6:13 am #356426
Extremely saddened and shocked to hear of Renaton’s passing. He was one of my favorite posters at Gold Derby for many years, and his recent absence has certainly been noticed. My condolences to his family and friends!

RIP Renaton. It took a while but we earned each other’s respect. I will miss him greatly, as will the entire membership.
Very sad news. One of our own, and one of the best.July 28, 2015 at 7:37 am #356428

Damn. I did not see this coming. This man was very insightful, and didn’t care who didn’t like his opinion. He’d be up for a debate with anyone. That is an admirable quality in people, and that was such with Renaton. May he rest in peace.July 28, 2015 at 8:56 am #356430
Descanse em paz, meu querido Renato. Saudade.
