Gone from the cast are Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis. Seth Meyers will be leaving sometime in the fall. Everyone else in the cast should be returning.

Given his appearances in a few major films later this year (The Hobbit; August: Osage County; The Fifth Estate; 12 Years a Slave) and the 3rd series of Sherlock airing either late in 2013 or early in 2014, I can only imagine that Benedict Cumberbatch would be a viable candidate.

Some others I’m thinking (and possible projects they might promote):

Will Ferrell (Anchorman 2 coming out later this year; returning alumnus)
Steve Carell (Anchorman 2 and Foxcatcher)
Tom Hanks (Captain Philips and Saving Mr. Banks)
Chris Hemsworth (Thor 2 and Rush)
Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games 2 and American Hustle)
    Chris Pine (Jack Ryan)
    Bradley Cooper (American Hustle)
Jonah Hill (Wolf of Wall Street)
Matthew McConaughey (Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club)
    Josh Brolin (Oldboy)
    Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Don Jon)
    Shailene Woodley (Divergent)

For the opening episode, my guesses are…

LeBron James (had a huge 12 months; an NBA star would only be available in late Sept/early Oct)

Steve Carell (lots of great roles this year; been a while since he hosted)

Amy Poehler (promotes new P&R season; they need a veteran with all the cast members leaving)

I think one of the old cast members will host the premiere. Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon or Will Ferrell are my best bets. I hope more women host this year, too; past season had only 5 females versus 16 males.

I wonder if Fallon might host just before/after officially taking over the Tonight Show next February.

Have they announced who will be taking over the head writer position from Seth Meyers?

Have they announced who will be taking over the head writer position from Seth Meyers?

Colin Jost shared the co-writer position with Seth Meyers this past season, so I imagine he will either continue in the position solo or share the position again with another veteran writer like John Mulaney.

As for the season premiere, I’m predicting Steve Carell and Jay-Z. Steve has had a lot of buzz this summer with Despicable Me and The Way, Way Back and Jay-Z is a NYC icon, SNL fave, and has just released a buzzy album.

The gutting continues. Sudeikis has a nice budding film career going though, so he should be fine either way.

So pretty much most of the old gaurd is gone? I guess they keep that Kenan to dress up as a black woman.

I wonder if they’ll promote any/all of the featured players this year. Kate McKinnon seems to have gained enough prominence to earn the distinction, at least.

    You’re on fire today.

Please no Jennifer Lawrence. She was surprisingly awful as host.

    Maybe Tina Fey will host?
