In 2009, the Emmys changed the number of Best Comedy/Best Drama nominees from five to six.

This year, they changed that number again, from six to seven.

I think we all know where this is going: a Top 10 for Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series.

Do you that’s a good idea or a bad idea? What are the pros and cons of having 10 nominated series in both of those top races?

It’s less of an honer if you get nominated with 9 different shows opposed to 6 so I guess no

    10 Comedy Series
    10 Drama Series

    Is a bit much.

Even if they were to lump both categories together, I still don’t think that would work. It would probably end up being 9 dramas and 1 Comedy.

Going off this years line up. It probably would’ve been

    Game of Thrones
    Mad Men
    Homeland
    Orange
    Downtown Abbey
    Better Call Saul
    Modern Family
    Veep
    Transparent.

Maybe if they had a limit. Like 5 dramas and 5 comedies in the category.

I think most people here would say no, but I’d say “yes.” With basic cable and online media on the rise, I think getting nominated would still be a feat. People would still complain over their favorites being snubbed.

10 comedies, 10 dramas, and 10 Movie/Miniseries combined in the same category.

It is hard enough to come up with seven worthy nominees in either category, let alone ten.

It is telling that only one drama this year managed to get nominations for both writing and directing, while three drama nominees were omitted in both.

Seven is random though.  We should go back to five (round number) or six (match the other categories).

And before anyone brings up how the Oscars have ten-ish nominations, remember that the Emmys already split their top award into drama, comedy, limited, movies, variety, reality and so on.

It would just water down the prestige of a nomination even more. You know it’s bad when people are saying ‘Empire’ got snubbed.

    Cut it to five.

    No

I want my fav tv shows and actors to be nominated, but I
prefer to watch them snubbed than nominated with 9 others shows.

I also would cut it to 5 or 6 if there’s a tie.

Well the Oscars also have separate categories for Animated films, Documentaries, foreign languae films, short films, and so on…

But I still understand your point.

No. Only ten if they ever create a programme of the year category. For Series, seven is more than enough.

It starts to become “lets give everyone an award” mentality once we start increasing the number of nominees. We could have 10 nominees in every category and people would still complain about snubs. That will always happen and I enjoy the snubs….as much as a I enjoy those who get nominated. It gives great conversation and those who are snub get what any actor/show could hope for….a devoted fan based and be part of the conversation

Plus Picture is an all-encompassing feature category which the Emmys lack. And it’s largely because those other categories are movies that find it very difficult to enter the big one.
