With the news that Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are teaming up for a variety show on NBC, it got me thinking about this category, which the academy axed.
Here’s the deal, sketch variety shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “Inside Amy Schumer” are not comedy series; they have their own award, so why do their casts compete in so many different categories — lead, supporting and guest.
It does a disservice to the variety show regulars and guest stars to lump them into the comedy categories.
The guest acting awards aren’t even given out on the primetime show, so why not have more?September 30, 2015 at 1:53 pm #363107
This question has been discussed several times. The answer is yes. Will they? I don’t know. You could have 4 separate categories — Variety Performer, Variety Guest Star, Host of a Variety Series, and Host of a Variety Special.

It never should have been axed. Jon Hamm should have won guest comedy actor in 2009 not Justin Timberlake, Fallon winning this category twice was silly if that had been the variety performance category then it would be fine but to have variety performers win or compete in the same category as actors who play one character is ridiculoius.October 1, 2015 at 1:56 am #363109

They should bring it back, but they have to modify it from what it originally was. The reason, at least, that I believe they got rid of the category was because the award kept going to people like Tony Bennett or Barry Manilow who would have some kind of concert special and win, over people hosting the Award shows and the Variety hosts and performer people. I think once strange year, Wayne Brady won for “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and I remember Hugh Jackman winning for hosting the Tonys, but the catch-all category was comparing apples and oranges and needs to be adapted, not thrown away like they did. That said, I actually don’t have that big an issue with the Variety Sketch performers getting nominated with the Comedy Series performers, even Amy Schumer, who is not what I would consider a “host” in the traditional sense on her show, but with so many important Variety Show hosts out there, there should be a separate category for them, as well as a separate individual category for Host of a Variety Special or a One-Time Hosting Gig. So like, a category for the regular hosts, and a category for the Single Hosting Performance in a Variety Series/Special, so that can include the Awards hosts and the SNL hosts, and I’m sure there others out there; that could be where those Tony Bennett performers could get in, and not have, say a Steven Colbert get shut out of a category that he probably should’ve won ten times over, if it existed.October 1, 2015 at 9:10 pm #363111
I thought this category should be back but only if they award people in comedy not Tony Bennett or Barry Manilow. I thought it was BS that Don Rickles when he was in a documentary and in a documentary you are not playing characters or giving a performance. I think the category should only be for comedy actors on Variety series for sure not hosts of The Tonys like Hugh Jackman.October 1, 2015 at 11:05 pm #363112
It just seems obvious to bring it back. Of course the significance of a variety performer getting into a lead or supporting comedy category wont’ be a thing anymore, and the variety performers most likely won’t be rewarded during the main show, but it’s still more fair.
