Last year, the award for Outstanding Television Movie was presented at the Creative Arts Awards. Will the same thing happen again this year? If so, why? I think that’s one award that deserves to be presented on the main telecast.

I think last year they did it because the nominees were so boring but this year they’ll have it back in the main show because there are nominations for Luther and Confirmation which will further expand the chatter about diversity. Plus the nominees are actually really good and high profile it’d be a mistake not to

Hm…I don’t know if I fully agree with Kylie. Bessie and Nightingale were stronger movies than Confirmation and Selma Part Deux. But the Grace of Monaco inclusion was an embarrassment for the category tho.

I say it never should have been cut though. Seeing Queen Latifah and Bessie win last year would have been great,

It should be cancelled and re-merged tbh.

Most of this year’s nominees have only 1-2 other noms.

I expect that it will be back on the main telecast, if only to get the Cumberbitches riled up. But even seeing Bryan Cranston on the stage again will be a draw. And even if by some fluke, he loses, they are guaranteed a hot star (Kerry Washington or Idris Elba) or a veteran with the cool factor (Bill Murray), which Queen Latifah did not have.

It should undoubtedly be re-merged, but it is no danger of that happening. The Emmys have a thing called the Rule of Fourteen that says that if a category has fourteen or fewer nominees two years in a row that it gets merged. It is set at fourteen because the Emmys have another rule that says that the nominees in a category cannot exceed one-third of the submissions. So anytime that you see a category that does not have a full five nominees, know that that category is on probation. There were twenty-nine movies submitted this year, so it is not even close. And when they were merged last time, it was the fault of the miniseries side (which had had two nominees the past two years), not the movie side (which has always had the standard five).

The category never should have been moved to the Creative Arts in the first place.

Last year, Bessie was really the only high profile movie out there. This year All the Way, Confirmation, and A Very Murray Christmas got some sort of media attention when it was released. And Sherlock and Luther both have big fanbases who will tune in just for the one category so I don’t see why they wouldn’t do it

The category should definitely be presented on the main telecast again this year. My only conclusion for why it was moved to the Creative Arts last year is that the Academy was embarrassed for the nomination for Grace Of Monaco. The lineup looks much better this year.

I’m pretty sure it’ll return to the main telecast this year and it should…

Well they definitely shouldn’t move the category on the account of Kerry Washington LOL. She’s not even attending the Emmys this year. Homegirl will be giving birth or just gave birth during that time

I know there are a lot of John Ridley’s American Crime fans on this forum who would have been heartbroken to have seen it snubbed for TV Movie / Miniseries, which is most definitely what would have happened if there had been combined categories.

All The Way would have replaced American Crime as the 5th nominee. Since I absolutely hate American Crime, I would have loved that, but I recognize that there are not many people on this forum that would have felt the same way.

This makes me feel bad for the producers of last years Best TV Movie winner, Bessie. The one freaking year the category is not presented on the main telecast is the year they take home the gold. Sad. 🙁

Agreed about the better lineup, with no “Grace of Monaco-esque” embarrassment like Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No or Manson’s Lost Girls would have been. 😉

Splitting the Creative Arts between comedies/dramas and the rest makes me think that maybe splitting the Creative Arts was a good idea actually. I will sadly not be able to provide live commentary on the comedy/drama winners this year and will probably be busy for the second day as well.
