In the current days of television, we see many cases of genres being combined to create different types of shows. We have the dramatic comedy and the humorous drama

My question is which shows (whether in the past or currently running) could have competed in different genres? Which “dramas” could be classified as comedies? Or vice versa.

Which shows, if submitting in a different genre, could have received Emmy love opposed to being shut out now?

    Example:

    • I think that Boston Legal could have submitted in Comedy Series. I laughed more at that “drama” than I did at any episode of Modern Family
    • Shameless deserves to be in the Comedy category. It is not really a drama.
    • Nurse Jackie should not be in Comedy! It is a humorous drama and should have submitted in Drama in the first place

    Any others?

    Desperate Housewives

I think Shameless belongs in drama. Fiona has a lot of dramatic moments (ex. her season 1 speech to Monica).

I don’t get why people say ‘Shameless’ is a comedy…
The only comedic character is Frank…  Apart from his character and (some of) his storylines, there isn’t much comedy
This past season, Fiona’s and most of the children’s storylines where quite dramatic…

Shameless can be a very funny show, but it’s really a drama.

Desperate Housewives could have gone for drama, but it deserved its place in comedy.

    Nurse Jackie is a comedy.

The classic case is Gilmore Girls–I would consider it a comedy but I know others would disagree.

Northern Exposure was considered a comedy series by SAG and the Television Critics Association. It was nominated as a dramatic series four times by the DGA before being placed in comedy. Even its producers thought of the show as a comedy series.

Freaks and Geeks was nominated for Outstanding Drama by the Television Critics Association, but I would classify it as a comedy.

I think Nurse Jackie and Boston Legal are very good examples, especially
Jackie. Just because the show has some light moments, that doesn’t mean it is a
comedy. If it was submitted in the drama categories, Edie Falco would be a very
strong nominee for Drama Lead Actress.

Boston Legal still had its moments where there was
no doubt it was a drama. The season one finale (which I think was James Spader
Emmy winning episode) was a very dramatic hour. But then when you watch season
two, the craziness and comedy are so intense that a switch to the Comedy
categories would be the right thing to do.

As of Shameless, I have mixed feelings about that.
Yes, the show has its comedic elements, but also has very strong and dark
stories. Especially when you remember what Fiona has been through. Emmy Rossum
actually should’ve been one of the frontrunners to take home the Emmy this
year. It would’ve been a very tight race between her and Claire Danes.

I guess many of the Showtime comedies are good
examples. United States of Tara should’ve been a Drama contender, just like
Weeds. The main storyline of the show is pretty dramatic, the only reason that
it still can be considered a comedy is because of all the crazy stories that
are only made to shock viewers. For me, those excessive stories are part of the
reason why the show’s quality has dropped over the years.

If each episode of Shameless lasted less than 30 minutes, I think Showtime would place it as a comedy series. Fiona, and to lesser extent, Lip and Ian, are dramatic characters. The rest is comedic, especially Frank and Sheila. The drama element of the show is lessened by how chaotic and dysfunctional this family is.

Even though Nurse Jackie is more dramatic than comedic, I’m fine with where the show is placed. Merritt Wever wouldn’t be an Emmy nominee today if the show competed as a drama series. Apart from Zoey, O’Hara and Coop are pretty funny characters.

Akalitus is pretty funny, too. I love Zoey, but my favorite funny lines come from O’Hara. Her line delivery is great. Good dry wit.  I just don’t understand why anyone would want to put Nurse Jackie in the same category as Homeland, for example.   There are comedies with dramatic moments (like this one), and there are dramas with comedic moments, (many examples), but I can’t think of any that should be in different categories.

I think Shameless’ comedy is more ridiculous/trying too hard than funny. Its dramatic side is what sticks with you. I don’t even consider Macy’s performance a comedic one, just a really overripe dramatic performance. Nurse Jackie is very dark, and Falco always brings more a dramatic tension to the role, but the show in general is a comedy. I do think in the last couple of seasons of USOT it was a drama.

I thought Freaks and Geeks was a really light drama, but I had no problem with it competing in comedy. Gilmore Girls wavered back in forth. Some seasons it was slightly more of a drama, in others it was more of a comedy. It was change from episode to episode. Comedy was where it always belonged however.

Yeah, “Nurse Jackie” is a very tough call. It feels a little wrong in both drama and comedy, but I think the key is the fact that while Falco is occasionally funny, the supporting cast is VERY funny. Wever is finally a nominee, but Best and Smith are deserving comedic nominees as well. I wouldn’t give him a nom, but Facinelli’s character is totally comedic. So none of the supporting actors would have any kind of chance if they were competing in drama.

Boston Legal and Nurse Jackie are good examples, however, i think they are placed properly in their respective categories.
