In a straight up popular vote where most of these voters probably didn’t even watch AHS: Asylum, doesn’t that help out the popular veteran actors actor who they love Kathy Bates?  She’s pulled 2 shockers in recent years with the tape system.  She could certainly win in a popular vote based on her name, industry respect, and total voter ignorance.  The most respected actress in the category.

This is another potential trainwreck category ala Martindale to watch for this weekend.  I don’t think anyone can say with a straight face that Bates deserves it over Paulson but here we are having to atleast entertain the very real possibility it will happen.

If this happens to Sarah again…..

Yeah, I brought this up in the Sarah Paulson thread and our limited series slugfest yesterday. I will probably switch to Bates soon. Paulson could not even beat name recognition under the tape system. Helping her though is that her show appears to be widely watched, based on its Creative Arts showing and people who saw the season will mostly vote her.

I know.  It literally just hit me this afternoon that there is a very real possibility of this happening.  Bates is basically Martindale here.  People love her personally and professionally.

I’m gonna need to be on meds between now and Sunday.  My brain is being fried right now with all the scenarios that could play out.  No one is safe. Besides maybe Tambor and Hamm.  Not even Dreyfus and Janney.

I am worried about American Horror Story, Peter Dinklage and Julie Bowen. Is Adrien Brody a threat?

Ricky Gervais winning for “Derek Special” would be a real shame for anyone who has won this category before but I can definitely see it ahead of Brody, Rylance or Hutton. EVERYONE knows who he is whether they like him or not. David Oyelowo or Richard Jenkins wouldn’t have been nominated for Lead Actor category at the Emmys if they starred on some weird low-rated, critically thrashed British show even no one in England doesn’t give a shit about, but Gervais did get nominated not once, but twice and has been expected to win last year.

    2008-Paul Giamatti-John Adams
    2009-Brendan Gleeson-Into the Storm
    2010- Al Pacino-You Don’t Know Jack
    2011-Barry Pepper-The Kennedys
    2012-Kevin Costner-Hatfields&McCoys
    2013-Michael Douglas-Behind the Candelabra
    2014-Benedict Cumberbatch-Sherlock
    2015- Ricky Gervais-Derek Special

Ugh! An argument could be made about Cumberbatch benefited from a category fraud last year but at least he was deserving, as was the show. This is not only a category fraud, it is also awarding one of the lamest performances in recent history in one of the lamest shows for Movie category.Him winning in Comedy at least would have made a much more sense than this.

Yep. Poor Sarah Paulson. She is so not winning. It’s gonna be Bates, and Paulson is gonna be heartbroken again, because you just know she is dying to win an Emmy.

I would be surprised if Brody won.  He’s an Oscar winner but his project is really low profile and I’m not sure he is currently as respected in the industry as a David Oyelowo who still has the good will for his Selma snub or Richard Jenkins a respected actors actor in a Best MiniSeries frontrunner.  But who knows.  In a popular vote with no overwhelming frontrunner I really see Oyelowo taking it due to the good will from his much publicized Oscar snub.  That outcry similiar to the outcry over The Americans snub which may have also helped Martindale.

Sadly this also probably means Bill Murray will win for that nothing performance.

I do consider Dinklage to be a big big threat for the win.  I think it’s between him, Jonathan Banks, Michael Kelly, and even Jim Carter.  All respected actors in popular Academy shows..

I just don’t see Julie Bowen winning at all.  The buzz right now around Modern Family is non existent.  The lukewarm applause for it’s wins last year are telling. The sentiment for giving it anything has to be at an all time low.  That could survive a small panel of voters but not a popular vote. If they go against Janney I have to imagine it would go to Anna Chulmsky or even Hoffman or Krakowski before Bowen.

Guest Emmy categories should be seen as disposable. Bates had to wait until her third decade with the TV Academy to actual receive wins. No one should begrudge her the recognition. She has the most nominations of any actress in supporting actress for a movie or miniseries. She should have at least one. And she does. If she wins again I won’t cry foul but I will be disappointed for Mo’Nique and Regina King. Kathy Bates having 3 Emmys after 13 nominations is not overkill to me.

The voters obviously dont watch The Americans, so they probably just saw Martindales name and thought “All the critics love The Americans and I like Martindale so she must be good and gave her a high rating”. But the voters obviously watched AHS Freakshow (it has 20 noms), so if they actually watched the show they know Paulson is better, plus it isnt like last year where Bates had a lot to do in the first couple episodes (most voters only watch the first couple episodes), she had her moments later in the season

^Um are you sure about that last statement?  I am pretty sure that Kathy Bates character was killed off around the midpoint of the season, so her strongest work was again at the beginning of the season.  Not to mention I doubt that the voters truly watched AHS, and simply checked it off in most categories as it was a familiar name and did not have much competition as well.  Not to mention the show is littered with big names, so it is easy for them to rack up acting nominations

And sorry, but I have to disagree with this entire thread.  I agree that Kathy Bates could win, but to claim or call her win unjustified or a simple product of name-checking is wrong.  And to compare a possible win of hers to Margo Martindale winning this year is 100% completely wrong.

Kathy Bates was one of the few bright spots of this past season of AHS.  In a season that featured many wasted actors and talent, she was one of the few standouts.  Her character also had one of the few complete story arcs, a backstory that actually made sense, and she was one of the few sympathetic characters.  Her nomination this year is a very well earned one.  Her role may not have been as flashy or baity as Sarah Paulson’s, but she was every bit as good as Paulson or anyone on the show.

And unlike Martindale, she was actually a significant and meaningful part of the season.  She was strongly featured in several episodes this season, especially at the beginning of the season.  I believe her best episodes might have been “Edward Mordrake Part 1” where she confessess that she is dying and gets her affairs in order.

This past season may have been truly awful, but Kathy Bates was certainly not the reason for that.  She was one of the few bright spots this past season.  I was not bothered by her win last year and would have no problem with her winning this year.  It would be nice if Paulson won, but I do not think she should be a lock or anything like that.  Nor would her losing be getting “screwed” this year.

She was killed off in episode 8. So yeah, when I said midpoint I meant more like episodes 5-8. And Denis OHair isnt a huge name at all.

The results in the guest categories do say something about the new system, but it doesn´ t mean that suddenly every big/popular name in a certain category will win, come on…

It´d be ridiculous if Bates won again, though it would be more deserving for this performance than for last year´s, which was awful. I´ll keep predicting Paulson, but after continued snubs for her, I´ll never be confident about her winning, and I´m definitely afraid that Bates will win again.
