    Anybody watching this series?

Just finished my binge and really enjoyed it. Very fun 80s sci-fi/horror throwback anchored by a really strong performance from Winona Ryder. I wonder if it will make any awards show impact. It has gotten pretty strong notices so far (76 on Metacritic from 31 Reviews is pretty strong for a first year show) and Netflix has a knack for getting its more acclaimed shows Emmy love. Has a well received Netflix show ever missed (not counting BoJack Horseman in animated races)?

I don’t think she has ever been nominated for an Emmy or Globe (for TV work) but I could see the Globes in particular maybe throwing her a nod. Part of me things that if Show Me A Hero hadn’t been completely forgotten then she could have gotten in at the Emmys this year. Anyone else watching?

Watched the first episode. Very intriguing. Shows a great deal of promise.

It is oozing in nostalgia and nods to Spielberg. Definitely looking forward to more.

In terms of Netflix acclaimed series without Emmy love – Narcos.

I’ve watched the first 2 episodes and loved them. It’s like Goonies meets ET meets X-Files with probably about 100 other things thrown in. I’m glad to see Winona Ryder back and front & center. Hopefully this will lead to even more and interesting work from her. I can’t wait to watch the other chapters!

I only watched the pilot, which was fine and good, but peak TV. Does it get better? (I loved The Goonies.)

This is very good and make homage to many 80 sy fy movies like the Goonies, ET, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Aliens and other kind of movies like Stand By Me.

It gets much better. The first two episodes were just fine, but the second half of the season is superb. I loved it.

I agree that it really picks up in the third episode but I was enjoying it from the beginning so maybe just not your thing? It is not what I would call “prestige television” but it was a fun and highly enjoyable binge. It’s definitely better than some up the stuff clogging up the best drama category right now and it would be nice to see the Emmys embrace something so different.

You are right, I forgot about Narcos – that seems to be the one example, although it did pretty well at the Globes this past year. Maybe a similar fate for Stranger Things although Ryder is obviously much more of a known quantity than any of the stars of Narcos.

Narcos really hit the mainstream in a way that I have not seen with Stranger Things, although there is still time. Stranger Things also has its genre, July release and lack of big names behind the camera working against it.

Fair points all around – if it gains awards traction it will definitely be against the odds. I still think, though, that the 80s nostalgia angle could appeal heavily to the binge-watching public if enough of them actually discover it. It’s always so hard to gauge how these things will hit when they are all dumped over one weekend and everyone watches at their own pace.

On another note, I really like the super simple but very evocative title cards.

Watched the first episode and loved it. I can’t wait to see how everything turns out. This show was a very pleasant surprise, and I actually do think it could Emmy love (just in a few minor Creative Arts categories).

    Loved the season!

So glad to see Ryder doing something this good, and she had some wonderful moments in this. I really hope she gets Globe/SAG recognition (and Emmy too, but it’s going to be much more difficult).

I’m 5 episodes deep and obsessed. Such a summer delight! Winona Ryder is absolutely fantastic in this, and the child actors all deliver too.

I love the creepy, artsy, nostalgic feel to it. Great storytelling.

Might give the pilot a try just to see what Winona is up to. This genre and nostalgia isn’t normally my thing, so we’ll see.

Finished last night. This is a solid, solid show. Winona Ryder was good, especially around the third or fourth episode when she was really on the brink, but the stand-out was twelve-year-old Millie Bobby Brown. That girl should be going on to big things. A second season seems like a bad idea or at least unnecessary, but we shall see.

I just watched two episodes yet so I might change my mind but I think Winona Ryder should submit to Supporting Actress category for this show. The story clearly revolves around children and Supporting Actress Drama has 4 empty slots. She’d be a slam-dunk nominee imo. So far my favorite character is Dustin though.
