I mean, honestly! Year by year, that’s kinda the only thing against Dame Maggie. That she’s not sucking it up and she’s not showing up every time she’s nominated for an American award. People don’t understand that it’s not her being not nice, but for a 81-year-old actress as her, it has simply no point to fly long kilometers to sit around and smile at the Emmy awards for nothing.

My suggestion: tell her if she has won, so she won’t show up for nothing! Hide the obvious (so the other nominees won’t feel like it’s suspicious) by keeping her attendance as a secret (ala Julie Andrews at the Oscars) and let her have a moment.

She’s not going, especially because she’s already won for this role before. AND IT SHOULDN’T MATTER.

The best thing about the Oscars in the 70’s is the causal attitude the nominees had about attending.

In that case, can all the obvious losers (and those overhyped actors who know they have no chance in hell to win an Emmy) please stay away from the ceremony.

If Emmy winner (and current frontrunner ) Maggie Smith is constantly being ridiculed for not showing up, than please clear the room and let obvious Emmy winners fill the venue.

If you don’t want to see Dame Maggie laying in bed in Bedfordshire as she wins Emmys, that is.

    Maggie

They need to give her some honorary award in five years to make sure she attends an Emmy ceremony before, you know, retirement

I’m sorry but this thread is ridiculous. Maggie Smith winning should not have anything to do with her attendance. It’s not the People’s Choice Awards! Also, I think that this idea gives the assertion that she hasn’t been turning up because she might lose. This is clearly not true as she was the BAFTAs this year so the issue obviously is about her not wanting to fly to the US, suggesting that even if she was told if she won it would mean nothing to whether she arrived or not.

    Regardless, Maggie for the win!

I couldn’t care less if she shows up or not. Who cares?

It’s not that I don’t want her to win because “she won’t show up.” I want her to lose because she shouldn’t even be nominated in the first place. That’s the real issue here, people. Stop going on about this “she never shows up!” nonsense, that’s completely irrelevant to the bigger problem (i.e. veteran rubberstamping).

You don’t get it, do you? This thread is FOR Maggie, not against her! All I am saying is to tell her if she won, so she can attend the ceremony. At the age of 81 it’s so stupid to except her to show up for a simple nomination.

She should at least send a video message a la Ricky Gervais the year Jane Lynch was the host, I don’t expect her to show up but at least this would be something

I am not talking about for and against (I know you love her like I do). I am just saying that the notion of telling people in advance if they’ve won would spoil the awards so badly as it wouldn’t be a far cry from choosing the winners based upon who’s attending (ala Teen Choice Awards).

Wow. That was a bit unnecessarily rude. Everyone’s entitled to be passionate about whatever they want to be. But since you asked, I was watching Veep last night 🙂
