I did a quick search and did not see an open thread for this show so thought I would start one up now that reviews are beginning to come in.

I was somewhat intrigued by this show way back when but thought it had the potential for disaster given the extensive re-tooling. However, I was slightly surprised to discover when looking through metacritic that it is actually currently at a 73 with I think 9 reviews. I am sure that number will shift once more start coming in but just for comparison, HoC is currently at a 76.

Now, I am not suggesting that The Catch can make it into drama but Shonda has had massive success in the past with her actors – this show stars two past Emmy nominees. Drama actor seems quite far fetched even for a known quanitty like Krause but I see potential in Mireille Enos (nominated a few years ago for her excellent work on The Killing).

I do not think that drama actress is so locked up this year – I see a lot of predictions including a comeback for Margulies and Dockery which certianly isn’t out of the the question – and one or both is even likely to happen – but aren’t voters more likely to go for a well-liked actress in a hot new show from a producer known for racking up acting nominations?

    Thoughts?

Does anyone watch it? Share your thoughts. What’s it about?
No one can’t force to me sit through another Shonda show before hearing some legitimate praise first.
Though, I like both Enos and Krause.

Currently debating whether or not I should tune in. The reviews have been mediocre so far and the extensive “re-tooling” and exit of the creator worried me.

But it IS ShondaLand + Mirielle Enos!

This looks very off-brand for Shondaland. Like something that should be on USA starring Piper Perabo and Matt Bomer. Nope!

Well it’s at 70 with 14 reviews which is pretty good I think. I am biased since I watch all Shonda shows and Grey’s is still one of my favorites. I think the leads have potential as her shows have gotten a lot of acting nominations and even some wins plus they have already been nominated before. If it breaks out in the ratings we should definitely consider it.

To be honest, the previews I’ve seen don’t look that interesting to me, but I loved Peter Krause in Parenthood, so I’ll check it out. Hoping it’s good.

Well no one watches it as of yet because it hasn’t premiered yet. Perhaps this thread is a bit premature but I thought Enos was someone who should at least factor into the drama actress discussion which has turned a bit stale so far this season. Drama actress is usually one of the more exciting races on the forums but is a snooze so far – maybe because the top contenders (Henson, Davis, Wright) are all on shows that I don’t care for at all. Let’s get a Ritter or a Wilson or an Enos to spice it up!

AV Club and EW gave it solid reviews but the Hollywood Reporter absolutely trashed it. I will for sure check out the pilot but given that I currently only watch one broadcast drama (The Good Wife which I am a solid half season behind on), the odds of it retaining my interest are somewhat low despite my residual Killing admiration for Enos.

I have to say that I kind of resent all of the negative comparisons to “USA style” shows that have been cropping up here and in some reviews – I think that USA has given some really solid fare in that genre at least for a few seasons – Suits, White Collar, Burn Notice were all well-made and enjoyable shows in my opinion.

P.S. Rooney, who is your new avatar? She’s the first one of yours that I don’t recognize.

Aww, it’s good to know I’m on your radar, darling.

It’s a naughty character from the show Shameless played by the goddess Shanola Hampton.

“Resent” it all you want to, but the USA show comparisons are perfectly apt here, for better or worse.

Ha of course you’e on my radar! Shameless is definitely a hole in my TV knowledge – may catch up one day but sometimes shows just slip through the cracks. I can only watch so much!

Will tune in to the premiere and see if it sticks with me. Might be only the 2nd basic cable drama I watch!

I thought it was fantastic! I was a little worried because reviews have been so-so but I thought it was great. I think Mireille and Peter were amazing, especially Mireille. There is something so likeable about her. I’m already liking the side characters too and I want to know what happens next. Plus, I buy the love story between Alice and Christopher. Loved the Pilot and I’ll definitely watch next week.

Peter Krause is too old for this role so it doesn’t make the show believable at all. They should have someone like Matt Bomer or Josh Duhamel have the male lead role, or stick with the former actor yeah he was unknown but he seemed believable. I’ll stick for a few more episodes for Mireille Enos so I hope I can get used to Krause.

I can’t help but feel the show would be a lot better with a bigger budget on a cable network.

I watched the premiere last night because I like both of the leads and very much enjoyed it. It’s certainly not “reinventing the wheel” of the cat-and-mouse drama, but I liked the performances, the fast-paced plotting, and the fact that this has a lot more levity than anything else in the TGIT line-up. I actually never find myself sticking with a Shondaland series for very long (I ditched both Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder last year), so I’m hoping The Catch holds my interest. Good start, though!

I thought Peter Krause was much more believable than Mireille with the younger guy that they had originally casted. Her character is too sophisticated. She needed someone she could feel secure with him and I think Peter played that perfectly.
