Nothing against Uzo, trust me. I truly appreciate her, on and off camera.

But she’s today a two times Emmy and SAG winner, while most of the big ensemble actresses will never be up for any award.

I just want to know if this record makes any sense to other regular OITNB watchers like me!

In year 2 Lorraine Touissant stole the entire season and shoudl have won the Emmy, but still I would have nodded Samira Wiley, Danielle Brooks, Yael Stone and Kate Mulgrew before Uzo.

Is all this acclaim over her costars really deserved, or Uzo Aduba is just a casuality?

Aduba is amazing. Crazy Eyes is such a unique character and there are a lot of subtle things to Aduba’s performance that makes it so brilliant. Sure, we’d all love to have seen Toussaint, Mulgrew & Stone up for the award as well, but Aduba is doing extraordinary work.

Aduba for me was the stand out on her own for season 2. Toussaint didn’t really factor in on my radar. Her acclaim is thoroughly deserved.

Looking at her nearest co-stars, and most talked about for nods, Mulgrew didn’t have as strong material in S2(or 3), as she had in 1. Season One had Mulgrew on fine form consistently, as viewers were allowed to work out Red on their own, through her dirty tactics with Piper, who was front and centre, whereas the other season have been full on ensemble. Stone was a victim of the changing guest roles. And in Supporting, she didn’t stand a hope in hell of a nomination.

Part of it is just that her character is so showy, and therefore stands out. All the other actresses have created great, memorable characters but Aduba’s character is just written to be more memorable. Also, she was the outstanding guest star in season 1, when all others were more supporting. That probably helped get her onto the Emmy radar, and it translated over to this season when she was more supporting. She wasn’t given as much to do in Season 3, so if there’s actually any justice in the Emmys, then she will be replaced by one of her costars.

Exactly this. It was a chain of luck.
Nothing against her, really. I think she was amazing in season 1, she wasn’t guest but whatever. But after that Emmy win, the industry just started to blandly name-check her because she’s proven to be an Emmy winner.
She’s nominated for a Golden Globe for season 2 over Toussaint and Stone. And then she won the Sag- a little bit of help from shows category switch and the popularity of OITNB- and then she gave a memorable speech in front of hundreds of actors. And then that have made her status even more stronger . And now they’re just lazily name-checking her even though they don’t watch the show anymore. Even the people who watch it still vote for her because they know it is a big ensemble which every viewer has their own favourites so if they vote someone left out of the field like Samira Wiley or Danielle Brooks, they know they will just waste their vote. So they just show their appreciation to the show over guarantee nominee Aduba.
I seriously doubt if we see another lady from Orange ever if the the show stays in the Drama category. If Toussaint couldn’t do that with her name and her memorable character(or Mulgrew), the others have a zero shot, sadly.

One can’t help but wondering. If Danielle Brooks submitted herself in the Guest category first year or Yael Stone’s background would have featured in the first season instead of two, would we see them at the same place Uzo has now? Probably not.
But sure, they would have had a shot at winning that Guest Actress Emmy and the rest… who knows.

It’s pure groupthink that has resulted in Aduba being recognized over everyone else, imo.

EDIT: Basically everything Deniz said, lol.

But Kate Mulgrew was on voters radars too, and fell off for season two. It’s not ‘lazy name checking’ for Aduba. It is talent.

Voters are clearly still watching the show, otherwise Mulgrew would have been the name check, over Aduba this year, surely?

Lorraine Toussaint was the best and only element of Season 2 that should have been rewarded with an Emmy.

Uzo Aduba was amazing in season 2 of OITNB. I thought Lorraine Toussaint and Yael Stone were right there with her, but I can’t begrudge her winning for her work in the sophomore season.

Here’s the thing: She isn’t worthy of a nomination (and certainly not a win) for her work in season 3. It’s not her fault, but she just wasn’t given the material. Her biggest storyline was being the novelist of Litchfield. It was entertaining enough, but nothing awards worthy. Really, the top supporting actress of season 3 is Taryn Manning, and the top guest actress is Natsha Lyonne.

Regardless, Uzo is dominating. I guess the Globes next? It and the TCA are all she needs.

I do think Aduba is amazing as Crazy Eyes, and I support her wins, but the fact that she is and will continue to be the only performer from OITNB getting awards attention BODERS ME SO MUCH…..LIKE, WAY TO MUCH. Again, not because of her, but because there are like 5 other actresses from the show that deserve nominations and/or wins just as much as her, and some even way more than Aduba. She does not get to be the sole representation of OITNBs acting!

Uzo is sweet and I love Crazy Eyes but season one was the perfect time to reward her. The character is just not an important part of the show anymore and she isn’t that relevant. The writers are purposely making opportunities for other characters to shine. Honestly, even with her sex novel story line, if the show went comedy again she shouldn’t be nominated. Stone was the comedic standout and would have won the tape system with the finale. She is just not deserving of recognition anymore and if she keeps getting it I will be incredibly pissed. Nothing against Uzo’s talents… crazy eyes is just done for.

Another joke last night @ the SAG awards.

Here Orange Is The New Black season 3 regular castmember who in my opinion were more deserving than Aduba:

    Taylor Schilling
    Laura Prepon
    Selenis Leyva
    Laverne Cox
    Lea DeLaria
    Kimiko Glenn
    Jackie Cruz
    Annie Golden
    Elizabeth Rodriguez

    and especially Taryn Manning.

Lmao. What a joke. She’s easily the most overrated actor on TV right now and she knows it. It’s easy to say “SAG are lazy sheep” and be done with it, but even flavors of the month who were leads of their own show like SJParker, America Ferrera and Teri Hatcher have won this award only once and needless to say, they were much more deserving. But at least people are getting tired of her, and she didn’t cry this time so that’s something. Poor Kemper and Poehler. They just looked like they wanted to take their own lives when her name was announced. JLD, you’re fine with your 4 Emmys.
