This is a made for TV film that premiered on BBC 2 last night in the UK and it definitely has massive awards potential. It’s also a Starz production, so it’ll also be broadcast in the US soon, making it in contention for the Emmys next year. My first thought after watching it was that it could easily sweep the BAFTAs, and could get some Emmy nominations. At the moment, I would say that McKellen and Hopkins would be shoo-ins for Best Actor, with Hopkins the more likely winner. Emily Watson and Vanessa Kirby also both have a shot at Best Supporting Actress. Remember, the previous adaptation starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay was nominated for 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for both Finney and Courtenay. Pencil this in for Best TV Movie! Let me know what you think if you’ve seen it, and whether it has a shot at either the BAFTAs or Emmys.
Courtenay was robbed from this years oscar. Hope the same injustice won’t happen to Mckellen and Hopkins at the emmys.
Did anyone watch this last night? If so, tell me what you think, and whether it has a shot at the Emmys. I would love to know what everyone thought of it.
Such an untalented cast!
Any comments? Reviews were great.
On Metacritic is scoring 84, better than frontrunner All The Way.
I enjoyed it. Did not like it as much as Confirmation or All the Way though.
Most of it takes place backstage in Anthony Hopkins’ dressing room. Great performances from both Hopkins & McKellen.
I see this getting nominated for TV Movie, but I think it’s difficult with co-leads because I think the only two scenarios are they both get in or they are both out.
Right now, I don’t think they are in with such competitive Limited Series/TV Movie acting categories (Cranston, Vance, Cumberbatch, Elba, Isaac, Kirby, Wilson).
