I watched the pilot last night, and can’t wait to see the next installment. Good stuff.July 4, 2016 at 9:32 pm #1201860210
I guess HBO is branding their miniseries as limited series now. The first episode was atmospheric with a nice slow build. Good stuff indeed, but held back from greatness for now from the plot necessitating characters to be stupid.
Riz Ahmed should have been Oscar-nominated for Nightcrawler, so I am happy to see him leading an HBO show, albeit with second billing. This also has him working with Nightcrawler cinematographer Robert Elswit. I would say that they reunited, but this first episode was actually shot years ago, before that movie.July 5, 2016 at 9:42 am #1201860301July 5, 2016 at 12:24 pm #1201860356
How did you see this in advance? Leaked online?July 5, 2016 at 12:28 pm #1201860357
HBO posted it early on-demand.July 5, 2016 at 12:37 pm #1201860358
Yes, it’s on OnDemand. Sorry, I meant to mention that.July 5, 2016 at 9:31 pm #1201860484
This was better than almost anything this year, top 3 episode of the year in my opinion. Terrific Pilot.July 6, 2016 at 9:29 am #1201860576
Only 5 reviews, but a 98 on Metacritic.
Still, I can’t help but wonder if it’ll end up being oddly forgotten like Show Me a Hero due to buzzier shows in the genre.July 6, 2016 at 9:52 am #1201860586
Show Me a Hero‘s problem was David Simon’s style. This seems like it will go more of the Olive Kitteridge route, both in terms of it being a bit more accessible and also facing weaker competition (no Fargo, plus American Crime Story might crumble).July 6, 2016 at 11:08 am #1201860612
^^Wont Fargo Season 3 be eligible next year?
Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.July 6, 2016 at 11:34 am #1201860623
It is coming spring 2017 after all. I thought that they were a fall show from now on.July 6, 2016 at 12:38 pm #1201860653
The Pilot is one of my VERY favorite episodes of 2016. This is going to be one of those shows that completely engulfs me, ala The Leftovers, American Crime and Mr. Robot and I CANNOT wait.
Everything about the first episode was cinematic and haunting. Beautifully written and directed. Riz Ahmed is just terrific. Already ALL about this show. Fully in. Can’t wait for episode #2 in a few weeks!July 7, 2016 at 6:21 am #1201860851
I agree about Riz ahmed . I am one of the few people that wasn’t in awe here for his performance on “Nightcrawler” eventhough he was decent there, but now with this, he just proved to be a revelation. I am tempted to watch nightcrawler one more time now with other eyes.
