Tom, why do you have Damian Lewis and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in 5th place? Bryan Cranston winning again?

I have a feeling a lot of these rankings will change once people watch all of the tapes.

It’s always interesting to me to see the differences between the expert, editor, and user picks.

I’m just starting to watch all of the tapes now. Yesterday I finished
comedy actress. Today I’m working on comedy actor …. Gimme some time
to catch up with Drama Actor, etc. For now I’m just throwing darts in the dark in that category.

As for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, I’m underwhelmed by her choice of eppys, frankly. I think that race is neck and neck and neck between Laura Dern, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler based upon my reading of the eppys. However, some of Gold Derby’s editors tell me that I’m insane (possibly true — they’re not the first to make that accusation)

Nice to see someone react well to Dern’s submission. Though I think it was a mistake I am rooting like hell for her to win for the sake of possibly seeing Enlightened return.

Why Do you think it’s a mistake? Voters are suckers for operatic drama in the comedy categories. Remember Falco’s win for Nurse Jackie?

Falco’s episode was dark, but it wasn’t comedy free. Dern had other “operatic” episodes that had at least a whiff of humor. If Dern wins it’d be the most dramatic, dreary episode to win a comedic acting Emmy in decades. Also, I don’t think Falco’s win had as much to do with tape as much as it had to do with her being Edie Falco and there being ho-hum competition.

Atta boy Tommy O’Neill!  Trust your instincts!  Do NOT back down!

I had the same reading you had watching the episodes, Dern and Poehler were best in show.  Poehler was never that good before, quite frankly I have always found her submissions to be overrated by most here.  And Dern just devastated me.  I have rarely seen a performance that raw and honest in quite some time. JDL was good but it was the SAME exact type of performance she won with last year.  Where’s the new side to Selina?

Do not let the JDL hacks intimidate you. They are hacks for the TV Academy.  They just want to spin it in advance to make it look like it should be a JDL runaway when in reality this category is deserving to be won by a couple of different women. They have been pushing her lock status for months cockily stating she could win with “any” episode.  Perhaps they are right, but it will be due to their extreme love of her more than her besting out Dern and Poehler in the acting department.

Dern had 2 comedic moments in her episode Icky:

First when she asked her mom how she looked, the mom responded she should cut her hair and Dern retorted “Mom he’s at the door I can’t get a haircut!”  Than in the scene with Mike White’s character he tells Dern he’s sleeping with Molly Shannon and Dern goofily yells “YOUR SLEEPING WITH HER!” and the entire office looks at them.

Those are 2 amusing scenes so to say it’s entirely dramatic is not 100% accurate.

I chuckled at those 2 scenes.  Funnier to me than Jim Parsons saying “pubic hairs” and puking over a porch railway in his episode.  Gotta love those witty Chuck Loree written comedic moments.  They could be written by any 15 year old boy in America.

Hacks for the TV Academy? Someone’s delusional.

It’s a competitive category with the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Laura Dern in the hunt for the Emmy.

    1. Who’s JDL?
    2. If you watched Veep, you would see that Selina shows a lot of compassion to her aides as the second season progresses. Sure, she’s still inherently selfish, but it’s not the exact same performance…

Also, she could legitimately win with 5 out of her 10 episodes, not because she’s JLD, but because she is that phenomenal in each of them… and this is coming from someone who wasn’t a big fan of Veep’s first season (I also don’t really like Seinfeld and I’ve never seen her New Christine show). Her work in the second season, cumulatively, is better than any *comedy* actress I’ve seen in years.

Face it. Some of you guys are JLD fanboys who are blind to what a lightweight submission she made. I can really see Poehler winning this category — she’s got the double episode, the heart tug (she’s getting married!) and she even portrays several different roles while impersonating TV reporters, etc., during the mock emergency in the first eppy. But Fey has a double eppy, too, and the heart tug (it’s her farewell from an Emmy-beloved show) and that scene in the strip club has a strong kick. I might move her down to third place, though. Hmmm. Dunno. But I’m keeping Dern on top.

    Listen.

There’s nothing more I would like to see than Amy Poehler up on stage in September. I understand that some people around here are fanboys, but I am certainly not. As a matter of fact, I think Poehler should have won last year, and the year before that!

In fact, besides Anna Gunn, there is not a win I would love more than Amy Poehler. I still think JLD was better on Veep, but Amy has put in 5 great seasons of Parks + Rec, so I wouldn’t complain if she won now. I should preface this by saying I haven’t rewatched Poehler’s tape, though. Tina’s is more of an ensemble, and I remember the wedding being very similar in screentime…

So, I guess we just disagree on the quality of tapes. No need to resort to the fanboy argument. I will, however, agree with your editors and say that you’re insane.

That’s exactly right! I’m thrilled to see you have ranked Dern no. 1! Yes! There have been a toooon of comments that say consistently the same thing: “Dern gives the best performance, just not the best comedic performance, and since this is a comedy category, she must be funny.” It’s like everyone [who watches the submissions] is saying she’s the best just not the funniest. I can’t wait to hear your arguments regarding your choice to keep her in top spot. Don’t be swayed — Dern’s got this!
