After making a full recovery from the mini-stroke I had when I first laid eyes on this incredible, insanely awesome interview duo that Variety was genius enough to pair, I figured I could muster enough strength to share it here. Holy geez.

Nope. Not buying Shameless as a comedy. Doesn’t deserve a single nod there. And yes, this was its best season yet.

Tatiana should have had her ass on THR panel.

You are just the Debbiest of downers sometimes! Where is CanadSexfan when I need him?

But I agree with you on Shameless/Comedy (though I’ll support any kind of recognition for Rossum), and that Tatiana should be on every single panel ever when discussing acting (because I think that’s what you meant).

Veep actually deserves a series nod this year.

    It does?

    Yes! It certainly does.

By the way, that interview was great. I love both of those actresses so it was nice seeing them hang out together. I recently opted for Emmy Rossum over Maslany in my personal awards, but they are both brilliant.

Riley, have you ever tried Shameless? It is so easy to watch. Some people have trouble with the implausability of it all, but I think they made a really great fourth season. I wish I could support the show in the comedy categories, but I can’t. However, and this is hypocritical, I would mark Rossum off first on my comedy ballot just so she could get some recognition… even if she should be fighting it out in the drama categories.

I watched Joan Cusack’s submission last year and put Rossum on my fantasy ballot for it.

Even in its first couple of seasons, where the show had a goofy streak that didn’t work, it was not a comedy. The fourth season makes ‘Orange’ look The Middle. I just can’t support such over the top fraud, though Rossum gave one of my five favorite performances of the season.

Veep will probably be my fifth or sixth comedy of the season. I always maintain an open mind. I don’t suddenly love it. The lack of quality comedy this season has a lot to do with me thinking it deserves its nod, but I do like the general arc of this season, its slightly less desperate to be edgy, and “Alicia” and “Debate” are the two best episodes of the series.

IF nominated for a deserved Emmy, should Rossum go with “Iron City” still? Or maybe “My Oldest Daughter”? I’m going to suggest the latter to her tomorrow because I can’t think of any other episode this season where she’s funny.

    SexFan/24Emmy/Anyone … thoughts?

The giant elephant in the room is that Shameless is not a comedy, and Rossum’s performance was the most dramatic it has ever been in season four.

I noted “There’s The Rub” and “Iron City” for submissions, but they are both serious and laugh-free. Did Edie Falco have comedic moments when she won for Nurse Jackie? Laura Dern wasn’t exactly hilarious in her submission last year, but she didn’t win…

Yeah, we’re just all going to have to get over the fact that it’s in the Comedy categories and move on. No sense in beating that dead horse anymore.

I re-watched “There’s The Rub” last night and while she’s great, as you say there are just no funny moments.

I also watched “My Oldest Daughter” because it had the scene where the guy bashed her winshield and where she had a few funny one-liners to the cup arena guy, and her boyfriend. Also, she hadn’t cheated or gone on a drug binge yet so that should help. It’s a solid tape. I don’t think she could win if everyone else submits their strongest, but it’d be the only tape that’d make sense.

Edie Falco may not have been funny herself much, but her surroundings were and she wasn’t as hard-core drama as Rossum will be. Toni Collette won this category with a tape that was not funny. I would point to Felicity Huffman, but she was helped by her co-stars submissions even if her tape alone wasn’t LOL.

Ultimately, I think this is JLD’s to lose (and it will be hard for her to with her material this season).

I want to see Rossum acknowledged, but her tape submission may not matter. In the interest of giving her the most comedic option, I think you have done a good job. If she wants to go for the fireworks and the drama, I have two submissions that would work well.

I would honestly go for the dramatic option, because we know that her comedy cannot match the others in the category. Why not go for something that stands out?

I do not remember Edie Falco or Toni Collette being funny, which is why I thought that Laura Dern would win.

Dude. That is a damn fine point. I’m back to liking your opinions. I’m going to tell her what a great suggestion you have for her if she by some miracle gets nominated. Should I quote you as CanadianSexFan or Dylan?

They may not have been funny, but their performances were at least vaguely comedic and their tapes definitely weren’t as aggressively dramatic and moody as Dern’s. It’s been quite some time since someone has won for submitting a thoroughly dramatic tape.

If Rossum manages a nod she really doesn’t have a choice but to go for drama-drama as opposed to Dern who did have other options.

Rossum is screwed. Laura Dern went for a big dramatic episode, and it stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the other nominees. No one was interested in it. All the goldderby editors (except for Tom) immediately dismissed her, and it’s clear the Emmy voters didn’t care either. I don’t see how Rossum, no matter how good she is, would be any different. But she’s most likely not going to be nominated anyway, so…
