Looks like we might have another Peter MacNicol situation on our hands. According to IMDB, Shannon Purser appeared as “Barb Holland” in 4 of the 8 episodes of Stranger Things, even though she was uncredited for the finale. That’s half the season, so she was in too many episodes to qualify as “Guest Actress.” When people found out about Mark Margolis being in half of Better Call Saul’s episodes. In order to qualify for Guest Acting, you need to appear in less than 50% of the episodes in your season, otherwise you will have to submit to Supporting. But, does her not being credited for the finale mean she can still be eligible?

If she is still an eligible, then cool! If she isn’t, then I find this sad. I thought Purser turned in solid work in Stranger Things, but she could have to have her nomination rescinded now. Diana Rigg also could not be a nominee for Game of Thrones last year, as she was in half the season’s episodes like Shannon Purser. Potentially tough luck for her and fans of her character, but rules are rules. 🙁

I also have had a couple issues with Wikipedia’s accuracy in the past, but just for the record it says Shannon Purser was in 5 of the episodes.

Her appearance in the finale was just her corpse. I don’t even think they showed her face. I don’t think a dead body is something the academy would care about.

I remember they showed her face because the same kind of slug-thing Will puked up came slithering out of her mouth. Peter MacNicol was in that 5th Veep episode for like 9 seconds, I’m amazed the Academy cared about that. Then again, he actually had dialogue, unlike poor Barb who was just a corpse.

I really hope that her nomination isn’t rescinded. A lot of people freaked out when she was nominated but I think that she is a worthy nominee. I checked the rules to see if it said anything about credited appearances as opposed to an appearance in general and all it said was: “if a performer appears in 50% or more of the episodes eligible for a given Primetime competition, then the performer is not eligible to submit in the ‘Guest performer’ category.” And even though it doesn’t say anything about credited episodes, I’m going to assume that they’ll let this slide because she isn’t credited for her 4th episode, she has no lines of dialogue, you see her for a second and she’s just a corpse. Plus she’s Barb and the internet is on her side. Maybe in the future they’ll make a clarification about what an appearance means.

I hope you’re right about that, for all the reasons you stated. I can’t wait to hear @riley‘s take on this, since he was the one who torpedoed Peter MacNicol’s nomination last year.

This doesn’t have anything to do with Purser, but with cable companies and streaming giants becoming more popular with the Emmys more and more show only have 8-10 episodes per season. So if a show has 8 episodes you can only be in 3 of them whereas on a network show that has 13-18 you can be in 6-9 of them? How is that fair? I think they should change the rule from less than 50% to up to 50%. It’s not much but it at least gives them one more episode.

I personally think the rule should be half  (rounded up) +1 and appearances under 30 seconds don’t count toward ineligibility for shows with 8 or more episodes. Under 7 should be half rounded up.

It should be noted that Jermaine Clement was submitted in guest actor for Legion and he had 2 voice over episodes so he was technically in 5 out of 8 episodes but I guess it didn’t count since he didn’t appear on screen?

Exactly, he didn’t “APPEAR,” so that is why he would have still been eligible.

Barb was in fifty percent of the episodes, but Purser “the performer” was not. As she was not credited for the finale, I have assumed that her appearance was just a dummy or CGI.

I don’t want Purser to be disqualified because she has such an inspiring great narrative even though I didn’t think her performance was worthy of spotlight.

But if she was disqualified, who should and will replace her?

Purser was only in 3. The other(s) were just made-up corpses for Barb and the actress was not actually there nor was she credited on the show…according to an article I’d read previously.

YES!!! Potential crisis averted! GO BARB! 😀

I would’ve prefered Irina Dubova was nominated for The Americans but I guess she wasn’t even submited, shame.
