Great video chat, guys!
You brought up the fact that Netflix could have an amazing night with House of Cards and OITNB in contention, but HBO actually has a better chance to sweep both categories, in my opinion.
True Detective is slightly ahead of House of Cards, and I think Veep + Silicon Valley are well-positioned for the comedy prize. Tom is right when he talks about Veep’s ascension, as the cast was recognized with a nomination at SAG (with JLD winning), PGA and DGA. Hell, it won the WGA (beating OITNB and MF)!
I feel like Riley is working backwards when he says Veep won’t win. He says that a series can’t win without being nominated in writing and directing, but I think he’s severely discounting the show’s chances in both categories this year. If Veep scores those two important noms (I’m predicting it will), he’ll hopefully change his tune.
And, finally, is there a bigger wildcard this year than The Good Wife? I’m predicting a snub, some are predicting a series win, etc… Nomination day sure will be interesting.
I am predicting a writing nomination; I am not sure what I said in the video, so my main reason for discounting Veep for the win right now is the assumption that HBO prioritzes campaigning Silicon Valley.
Even with all of the craziness surrounding category placement, there is a decent chance that the result is identical to last year; Breaking Bad takes drama, while MF ties Frasier for its last comedy win (both are slight favorites at the moment).
GD will be a fun place if that happens…
