I made a list of all shows that won multiple awards for comedy series. There were 12, and I can only list 10. The others are Get Smart (1968, 1969) and The Dick Van Dyke Show (1963, 1964, 1966), the latter of which initially competed in the “Outstanding Program Achievement In The Field Of Humor” category before the category was renamed “Outstanding Comedy Series” in 1966, so I disqualified that one. As for “Get Smart,” well, I needed to boot one more and I don’t feel that the film remake was enough to boost everyone’s interest in voting for it…

    G’Day,

Love me some Cheers. Great cast, funny writing and possibly greatest theme song of all time to boot.

Gotta love “Murphy Brown” which though doesn’t hold up so well now, was absolutely fantastic in it’s early days and the 1991-1992 season alone makes it a classic in my eyes.

I don’t know if I should vote. I haven’t really watched “Cheers”, just a few episodes now and then, neither did I watch “Taxi” or “All In The Family”. I believe I would love those shows if I actually took the time to watch them (time that unfortunately I don’t have much of right now). And between the ones I did watch, I’m torn between “Mary Tyler Moore” and “30 Rock”.

Now that I think about it, the Emmys have oddly been better at choosing comedies than dramas, even if this seems to have changed in the past few years.

wow, what a great list that is…except for Everybody Loves Raymond. So painful that that show is on that list. Modern Family could prove to be an equally unworthy winner in time.

    Where’s Arrested Development?

Well, you can’t erase the fact that it won twice, whereas AD didn’t…

I voted for CHEERS, though THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, ALL IN THE FAMILY and THE GOLDEN GIRLS came close.  Had the list included earlier shows that had different category titles I LOVE LUCY would have gotten my vote.

I am surprised by how much love you guys have for The Golden Girls in this forum. I must admit I have only watched some episode son re-runs, but I just didn’t think it was that great. Sure, the performances are quite good and it is a pretty funny show, but I think it just doesn’t compare to ‘All in the Family’, ‘Cheers’, ‘Taxi’ and ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ (my vote) in overall quality and influence in sitcom history.

Yeah, “Golden Girls” is pretty funny, but it’s nowhere near as groudbreaking and original (or even funny) as some of the shows on this list.

The Golden Girls deserves to win this.  The Golden Girls is a hilarious show and it is a show that has fans of all ages.  The cast was very talented and knew how to deliver the goods.  I will put in one of their dvds after a bad day and this show puts me in a very good mood.
