Some shows decline gradually as they lose their freshness and originality, while others kinda fall off a cliff, going from a great season to a shockingly poor one — think “24” from season 5 to 6, “Homeland” from season 2 to 3. What other shows had HUGE quality dips from one year to the next?

Dexter, from Season 5 to 6 (from the solid Julia Stiles season to the near-unwatchable Colin Hanks-Edward James Olmos travesty)
Roseanne, from Season 6 to 7 (when Amy Sherman-Palladino exited)
Tales from the Crypt, from Season 6 to 7 (when the show ceased production in the U.S. and moved over to the UK)

Dexter’s last few seasons. The quality sank faster than a brick in a swimming pool.

You just reminded me how bad that Sherlock special was. I forgot to consider that for my list.

    Empire.

Went from hilariously schlocky fun to totally unwatchable garbage.

Empire went from a good season 1 to a really bad season 2.

Unpopular opinion, but House of Cards season 3-4 (this was the worst season yet).

I don’t feel that Homeland had a sudden quality decline between seasons 2-3 or 4-5: the latter half of season 2 was very frustratingly bad, and season 5 – while not great – wasn’t a nose dive from the really good season 4.

    Empire season 2 is pathetic.

Not counting shows where the creator was fired/quit or shows with ill-conceived final seasons. Some of these shows recovered or semi recovered. Others did not.

    Friday night Lights, season 1-2
    Justified, season 4-5
    New Girl, season 2-3
    Dexter, season 4-5
    Mad Men, season 5-6
Homeland, 1-2 (the second half of season two is too horrible to not include. Season three was just a continuation of that mess)
    The Office, season 7-8
    Lost, 1-2
