I’m writing an article about “The Americans” and need your help. It didn’t get nominated for Best Series for its first 3 years, but now I think it’s got a real shot — for lots of reasons I’ll explain in the article.
What other TV shows took a while to get nominated in the top race — either drama or comedy?
How I Met Your Mother was nominated for its 4th season for the first and only time in 2009.
Big Love is one of the better parallels here. Boston Legal also got in for its third season, as did Parks and Recreation and Two and a Half Men. It took The Big Bang Theory and Scrubs four years.
Wasn’t until Season 3 that the Emmys embraced Everybody Loves Raymond at all. Also took three years for Designing Women to get significant love.
OSCAR FLASHBACK: Best Original Song (1956) – Doris Day ne déçoit jamais
The Emmy history of Best Drama Series shows a number of late bloomers.
Bonanza hit the airwaves in 1959 for a 14 year run, but nabbed its sole Best Drama Series in 1966.
The original Hawaii Five-O began a 12 year run in 1968 but earned its Best Drama Series nod in 1973.
The Rockford Files premiered in 1974 but didn’t receive its first Best Drama Series nomination till 1979.
Rumpole of the Bailey was not recognized with a Best Drama Series nomination till its fifth season in 1988.
In 1994, syndicated series Star Trek: The Next Generation earned its Best Series nomination in its seventh season.
Its least popular season yet is not getting in.
This is its least-watched season, but it is going into the Emmys with a WGA series nomination for the first time, plus this is its best season and there is more space than usual in the drama race. Not predicting it myself though.
