Which comedy, drama and limited series will be the most nominated next week? Give lists and/or details to back up your predictions.July 6, 2015 at 8:51 am #352369
Game of Thrones: Series, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Writing, Directing, Guest Actress and at least 10 Creative Art nominations.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Series, Supporting Actress, Writing, Directing, Guest Actress, Guest Actor and 5-6 Creative Art nominations, and maybe a surprising, but much deserved, nomination for Supporting Actor.
AHS: Freak Show: Series, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress (x2), Writing, Directing and 7 to 10 Creative Art nominations.July 6, 2015 at 8:54 am #352370
Comedy: I don’t think there is a standout–probably Veep
Drama: This year’s hot new show Empire will probably follow in the footsteps of others (Lost, Greys Anatomy, OINTB, and Glee)
As an example:
Lost: 12 nominations first season, 6 wins including Best Drama
Grey’s Anatomy: 3 nominations first season, Since this was a mid-season show I’ve included season 2; 11 nominations, 1 win
Glee: 20 nominations first seasonm 4 wins
OINTB: 10 nominations, first season, 3 wins
I know that with Lost and Grey’s Anatomy they had special effects and/or prostetic makeup but what all four of these shows have in common concerning nominations; are multiple actings nods, writing, directing, casting, and series.
Empire will probably score around 10-15 nominations once you get into all of the craft categories. I could see it scoring nods in the following categories:
Actor: Howard (although I believe he’s on the bubble)
Directing*: Lee Daniels, being a past Oscar Nominee cannot hurt and we’ve seen this trend as of late for pilots with wins for Scorsese and Fincher.
Guest Actress: Jennifer Hudson and/or Courtney Love
Guest Actor: Cuba Gooding Jr. is a past Oscar winner so he could get in on name recognition alone and with the new rule in these categories it actually increases his chances.
*Empire could score multiple nominations in either Directing or Writing.
One place I could see it scoring a surprise nomination would be Supporting Actor for its breakout star Smollett not many were predicting Colfer from Glee to get in for its first year.
Limited Series/Movie: Probably a close race between “Bessie” and “Olive Kitteridge” they have HBO behind them and they’re period pieces.July 6, 2015 at 9:13 am #352371
Game of Thrones, Olive Kitteridge or American Horror Story and Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtJuly 6, 2015 at 10:01 am #352372
Comedy–Modern Family, as it’s the only comedy series I can see racking up even a half dozen acting nods, plus all of the half hour technical categories
Drama–Game Of Thrones, as it will definitely get double digit nominations on technical achievement alone, with a few acting nods ensuring its place at the top.
Limited Series–American Horror Story: Freak Show, even if it doesn’t get the program nomination, as I am currently predicting, it’ll get a lot of technical support and multiple acting nominations. As great as Olive Kitteridge is, I think it’s too simply laid out to wow in enough categories to compete.July 6, 2015 at 12:28 pm #352373
Modern Family will definitely get a bunch of nods as usual. For Drama, Game of Thrones will probably get a lot of Creative Arts nominations and I also think Mad Men could get a significant amount of nominations as a goodbye hug. Limited Series/Movie is Oliver Kitteridge maybe, but AHS racks up those acting noms and technical noms too. Bessie will probably get a lot too.July 6, 2015 at 12:41 pm #352374
When the Emmy love for that American Horror Story crap will end? Fingers crossed for this year.July 6, 2015 at 1:02 pm #352375
Game of Thrones (18 nominations): Series, Writing, Directing, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Guest Actress, Cinematography, Costumes, Hairstyling, Interactive Media, Makeup, Picture Editing, Production Design, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Stunt Coordination, Visual Effects
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (10 nominations): Series, Directing, Supporting Actor, Guest Actor, Guest Actress, Casting, Music Composition, Original Lyrics, Sound Mixing, Title Theme
American Horror Story (17 nominations): Series, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actress, Casting, Costumes, Hairstyling, Main Title, Makeup, Music Composition, Production Design, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Supporting EffectsJuly 6, 2015 at 3:06 pm #352376
Game of Thrones will probably get more than 15 nominations and I don’t see any other Drama approaching that number.
AHS: Freak Show will probably get an even 20 nominations, since the competition it’s the weakes it has ever been and they have a boatload of recognizable names on that cast.
Modern Family with its 11-12 nominations will probably be, once again, the most nominated Comedy.July 6, 2015 at 5:42 pm #352377
Predicting Empire for writing is insane to me. I understand that it is a viable series contender because of its red hot status (and not because of its quality) and that it has an outside shot at directing solely by the virtue of Lee Daniels’ name but the writing branch in the past has been far more discerning in its picks. Empire earning a writing nom would make me sick let alone multiple noms as the upstream user suggested.July 6, 2015 at 6:55 pm #352378
Modern Family and Orange Is the New Black will likely be the most nominated comedies, with possibly, The Big Bang Theory in third.
Among drama series, I’m guessing Mad Men or Downton Abbey.July 7, 2015 at 2:11 am #352379
Wolf Hall (19 nominations): Limited Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor x 2, Supporting Actress, Casting, Costumes, Hairstyling, Main Title, Makeup, Music Composition, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Cinematography, Single-camera Picture Editing,
Game of Thrones (17 nominations): Series, Writing, Directing, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Guest Actress, Cinematography, Costumes, Hairstyling, Makeup, Picture Editing, Production Design, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Stunt Coordination, Visual Effects
Bessie (17 nominations): Television Movie, Directing, Writing, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Casting, Costumes, Hairstyling, Main Title, Makeup, Music Composition, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Cinematography, Single-camera Picture Editing,
Veep (7 nominations): Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Sound Mixing, Art Direction,July 7, 2015 at 3:56 am #352380
Definitely “Game of Thrones” for drama — an easy call.
Most likely “AHS: Freak Show” for limited — if history is any indication.
Could be “Modern Family” or “Veep” for comedy — this one’s tough!July 7, 2015 at 5:18 am #352381
Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall and Veep
