Similar topic regarding Golden Globes vs. Oscars got me thinking of so many possible situations when GG, mostly associated with awarding the hottest shows and not always what can be considered the best, do better job than the Emmys, the most important awards of TV.

    Jennifer Garner winning for “Alias”
Frances Conroy winning for “Six Feet Under”
Ellen Pompeo nominated for “Grey’s Anatomy”
Katey Sagal winning for “Sons of Anarchy”

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Kyle MacLachlan winning for “Twin Peaks”
David Duchovny winning for “The X-Files”
    Anthony Edwards winning for “ER”
Martin Sheen winning for “The West Wing”
Hugh Laurie winning for “House, MD”
Patrick Dempsey nominated for “Grey’s Anatomy”
Jon Hamm winning for “Mad Men”
Michael C. Hall winning for “Dexter”

    Best Comedy Series
    “Roseanne” winning”
    “Married… with Children” nominated
    “Desperate Housewives” winning twice

    Best Actress: Musical or Comedy
Katey Sagal nominated 4 times for “Married… with Children”
Laura San Giacomo nominated for “Just Shoot Me!”
Felicity Huffman nominated for “Sports Night”
Teri Hatcher winning for “Desperate Housewives”
Eva Longoria nominated for “Desperate Housewives”
    Mary-Louise Parker winning for “Weeds”
Courteney Cox nominated for “The Cougar Town”

    Best Actor: Musical or Comedy
Ed O’Neill nominated twice for “Married… with Children”
    John Goodman winning for “Roseanne”
Jason Bateman winning for “Arrested Development”
Steve Carell winning for “The Office”

    Best Supporting Actress
Jane Krakowski nominated for “Ally McBeal”
Nancy Marchand winning for “The Sopranos”
Rachel Griffiths winning for “Six Feet Under”
Kim Catrall winning for “Sex and the City”
Nicollette Sheridan nominated for “Desperate Housewives”
Sandra Oh winning for “Grey’s Anatomy”
Chloe Sevigny winning for “Big Love”

    Best Supporting Actor
Chris Noth nominated for “Sex and the City”
David Spade nominated twice for “Just Shoot Me!”
Robert Downey, Jr. winning for “Ally McBeal”

You said pretty much everything on my mind but my picks are:

All 3 wins from six feet under, i just CANT believe it never won an acting emmy, imo is one of the best acted tv shows EVER, along with the sopranos and breaking bad…

Calista Flockhart winning!!! and jane krakowski nominated, she should have an emmy or two for thta show, she is just as great as she is on 30 rock…

I agree with your mentions of married…with children!!!!!!

oh, and oviously michael c.hall winning…

I don’t think any single moment in awards history will surpass the moment when Mary-Louise Parker took down all four women from Desperate Housewives. That moment is what really made me appreciate the Globes.

GG have a mix of good choices and terible choices over the years just like the Emmy’s. GG biggest misfires have been the failure to nominate Breaking Bad, The Wire, Justified and Sons of Anarchy. They seem to be against gritty, downbeat shows involving drugs. Emmy’s have failed to recognize these same shows except for BB. Also Parks and Recreation. I still laugh at the nominations of Scott Caan and Piper Perabo a couple years ago. They fail to nominate Aaron Paul and Christina Hendricks, yet those other two got in. Callie Thorne getting in for Necessary Roughness. Their fascination with Ryan Murphy. Matt LeBlanc winning for Episodes. Thomas Jane being nominated three times for Hung. There is no denying that the HFPA is a mysterious group of people. They love to nominate the fresh hot new talent, they seemingly love Showtime and USA, and they are known to accept bribes. It’s weird because there are some choices that are really inspired and edgy, but then there are some that really boggle the mind.

Why Golden Globes are a joke:

-Breaking Bad fails to get nominated for best drama series yet shows like “Boardwalk Empire, “American Horror Story”, “Boss”, “Big Love”, “In Treatment” and “The Walking Dead” are.
-They said “Glee” was the best comedy series for TWO seasons. That’s enough to destroy their credibility. They were nominated for their atrocious third season as well.
-Spreading the wealth for “Best Drama Actor”
-Combining supporting races for drama series, comedy series AND mini-series. WTF. And someone like Chris Colfer wins? C’mon.

The Globes do quite good at choosing winners sometimes. Nomination-wise however, it’s always a clusterfuck.
If you look at Drama Lead Actress, they have done miles better than the Emmys. No countless consecutive winners, Jennifer Garner winning, Frances Conroy winning, basically all of the most relevant female leads of the past decade have won.
This makes the dubious, at times even ridiculous nominees very tolerable.

^ Dude, there are so many reasons why the GG awards are a joke. Ever year the GG are about to start, there are at least 10 articles from critics discussing how much of a joke the awards themselves are. Even people in the industry know they are a joke. They are not meant to be taken seriously, it is meant to be a good show/party, which it is. I find the GG to be the most enjoyable of all the awards shows.

    Among my personal picks

GG winners, but not Emmy winners: The Shield (series), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy)

Emmy winners, but not GG winners: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Terry O’Quinn (Lost), Michael Emerson (Lost), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Cherry Jones (24), Margo Martindale (Justified), Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), Julie Bowen (Modern Family)

Both Emmy and GG winners: Lost (series), 24 (series), Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), John Lithgow (Dexter), Modern Family (series)

For me, the Emmys trump the Globes in terms of winners. As much as we complain about the Emmys, they still produce decent to great winners, especially in recent years.

While BB never being nominated is quite rididculous, In Treatment, Big Love and the first Season of The Walking Dead were very good and deserved their nominations. And why exactly is spreading the wealth for Drama Actor a bad thing??!

In treatment I agree with, Big Love I don’t, and while The Walking Dead season 1 was good, it was 6 episodes long and it was obvious that Frank Darabont being the creator had a part in getting the nomination. I mean Andrew Lincoln got nominated. He was terrible in that first season.

Exactly. They’re not taken seriously, which makes the show enjoyable to watch. There’s booze and gift bags, which makes it fun for the stars to attend and it’s not as serious and uptight as the Oscars or Emmys at times.

Exactly. The GG are the awards where I can just relax and not care about the actual awards. You get to see tipsy stars  get up on stage. You get to laugh at Elton John eye murdering Madonna, etc. It really is a glorious show.

at the idea that “American Horror Story” in Drama Series is one of the reason why GG are superior to the Emmys. Not only was AHS was nominated in both (although in different placements), but the show is terrible. Nominating AHS anywhere is nothing to brag about.
